Washington sweeps SeattleU in season opening dual meet at Magnuson Park...

SEATTLE--If you were looking for some racing over 5k or five miles, Warren G. Magnuson Park was not the place to find it.

Both the University of Washington, sporting new racing singlets with the Big Ten logo instead of the Pac-12, and Seattle University, resumed the annual season opening dual meet on a cloudy Tuesday morning, in essentially a glorified workout in team uniforms.

The Huskies, who are nationally ranked in the men's and womens's USTFCCCA pre-season coaches poll, won easily over SeattleU by identical perfect 15-50 scores in the head coaching debut of Redhawk coach Jordana LeSavage, who was promoted after Kelly Sullivan retired as the head coach.

In the opening women's 5k, which was six laps of the gravel trail of the Magnuson soccer fields, the number 5 Huskies controlled the front of the pack, with only SeattleU's Azalea Groleau attempting to hang on to the group of nine.

Julia David-Smith (#325/Paul Merca photo) was given credit for the win, crossing the line in 17:54, with Chloe Foerster (#326) second in the same time.

India Weir and Penn transfer Maeve Stiles were third and fourth in identical times of 17:56,

Cal transfer Claire Yerby rounded out Washington's scorers in fifth in 18:04.

Groleau was the top finisher for the Redhawks in ninth in 18:26, followed by Liliann Hargreaves in eleventh in 18:33, and Saint Martin's transfer Alisha Saucedo in twelfth in 18:35.

McKenna White (18:48) and Diana Camargo-Solis (19:09) closed out SeattleU's scoring five.

In the men's 5 mile race, it was more of the same, with the Huskies controlling the race up front.

In the end, the top eight finishers all came in together, with 2023 high school All-American Tyrone Gorze (#339/Paul Merca photo) from Oregon credited with the win in 26:12.

Cornell transfer Ryhs Hammond, Jamar Distel, Pac-12 sprint relay scorer Thomas Diamond, and veteran Leo Daschbach all came in together in second through fifth, all credited with a time of 26:13.

Seattle University's top finisher was Seku Sanders in 13th in 28:59, followed by Alex Jensen in 14th in 29:06.

Jeremy Posedon (29:17), Porter Buck (29:18), and Lance Mason (29:37 finished in positions 15, 16 & 17.

Freshman Dylan Irey, who ran unattached, finished ahead of Sanders in twelfth in 28:39.

Besides Irey for SeattleU, the most significant runners missing from the meet were Olympian Sophie O'Sullivan, who was flying back to Seattle, NCAA ninth-place finisher Amina Maatoug, and Olympic Trials 1500m qualifier Nathan Green.

Maatoug and Green were held out of the meet.

Both Washington squads will head off to their annual pre-season training camp before returning to racing on September 27th at the Under Armour Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.

SeattleU will race on September 13th at the Cougar Classic in Colfax, hosted by Washington State University.
