Emmanuel Wells wins 60 at Idaho Team Challenge; CWU's Harris & SPU's Meyer highlight day 1 in Nampa...

In Moscow, Idaho, the Washington State Cougars made the short drive from Pullman and came away with four victories at the Idaho Team Challenge meet at the Kibbie Dome, hosted by the University of Idaho.

Emmanuel Wells of Washington State (above/photo by Paul Merca) sprinted past the competition in the 60-meter dash, winning the event with a time of 6.68 seconds overall, just 2/100ths of a second off his season best. Fellow Coug Ja'Maun Charles was right behind Wells to take second place overall with a PR of 6.74 as well.

Max English notched another victory for Washington State, as he took first overall in the high jump with a mark of 6-feet 7-inches (2.01m).

On the women's side, the Cougs got wins from Jordyn Tucker in the 60-meter dash, as she ran 7.61. Dropping down in distance, 2018 NCAA 1500 meter qualifier Kaili Keefe won the 800 in 2:12.95.

Eastern Washington showed why it's considered "Pole Vault U" east of the Cascades, as they took the first four spots in the women's competition and the top two places in the mens' vault.

The women were led by last week's Big Sky Conference field event athlete of the week Samantha Raines, who cleared 13-1 (3.99m), with Savannah Schultz (12-7.25/3.84m), Morgan Fossen and Katrina Terry (12-1.25/3.69m) following.

Freshman Zach Klobutcher improved by four inches in the pole vault, winning the event with an effort of 16-4 3/4 (5.00m) to best teammate Grant Shurtliff, who cleared 15-11 (4.85m).

Also picking up victories for Eastern Washington were Vernice Keyes in the weight throw (56-11.25/17.35m) and Rebecca Thareek (5-5.75/1.67m) in the high jump.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs got their two wins on the day from Sammy Truax in the mile (4:17.13), and Evan Bates in the 3000 (8:24.70).

Seattle University got their lone win on the day in the women's 60 hurdles, as Michelle Newblom set a school record of 8.91, a mark that puts her third on the Western Athletic Conference performance list.

In the team scoring, Eastern's women's team picked up a victory in team scoring, finishing with 146 1/2 points to place ahead of Idaho with 137, Montana with 113 and Washington State with 87 1/2.

In the men's competition, Eastern finished third with 90 points to finish behind Big Sky Conference rivals Idaho with 129 and Montana with 108 1/2, but ahead of WSU with 63 1/2.

In Nampa, Idaho, Andrew Harris of Central Washington won the men's weight throw at the Jacksons Nike Boise Indoor Invitational at Jacksons Track, hosted by Boise State University Friday.

Harris threw 58-8.75 (17.90m) as teammates Alberto Tafoya (54-9.25/16.69m) and Ethan Tonder (54-2.75/16.53m) finished third and fourth.

Renick Meyer of Seattle Pacific won the women's long jump with an indoor season best of 18=-9.25 (5.72m).  She also advanced to the finals in the women's 60 hurdles, running 8.94 to win her heat.

On the track, the Falcons went 5-for-5 in the qualifying round of the women's 200, led by Grace Bley, who had the second fastest time of the round in 24.78.  However, only Bley, Peace Igbonagwam (25.14), and Julia Stepper (25.52) will advance to Saturday's final, as only the top eight based on times move on.

In the women's 60, Igbonagwam (7.70), Jenna Bouyer (7.82) and Bley (7.86) advanced to Saturday's final.

Meagan Smallbeck of Central Washington (53-6.25/16.31m) was third in the women's weight throw, while teammate Halle Irvine (12-1.5/3.70m) was third in the women's pole vault. Seattle Pacific's Scout Cai was fourth behind Irvine, as she cleared the same height.

The meet resumes Saturday.
