INDIANAPOLIS--After the decision by the Big Sky, Western Athletic, and West Coast Conferences to postpone fall sports Thursday, former University of Washington president and current NCAA president Mark Emmert formally announced the decision by the NCAA to postpone all Division I championships in fall sports, including cross country Thursday night.

Emmert said the NCAA hopes to hold a “legitimate championship” for athletes who participate in those sports in the winter or spring.

Before the announcement Thursday by the Big Sky, WAC & WCC to postpone fall sports, the number of schools that opted out of competing in cross country in NCAA Division I was just above 50%, which was the criteria the NCAA Board of Governors required to contest a national championship.

This decision does not affect the top-tier Football Bowl Subdivision, which the NCAA does not govern.

Emmert's announcement can be viewed here.
