2012 Olympian Julie Culley named sports marketing manager at Brooks; GU alum Spencer Brown to train with Beasts...
SEATTLE--Brooks Running announced Thursday that 2012 US Olympian Julie Culley (photo by Paul Merca) will be the new sports marketing manager for the Seattle based running company.
Culley comes to Brooks after a four year stint as the director of track & field/cross country at Georgetown University in Washington, DC., after working for the Hoyas for two seasons as an assistant coach.
At Georgetown, Culley boasted 50 All-America honors in more than 10 different events. She coached the Hoyas to 36 BIG EAST Championships and four wins at the Penn Relays. Academically, the Hoyas performed exceptionally in the classroom capturing seven total nods to the 2020 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
The Rutgers graduate ran professionally, where she ran at the 2012 London Olympics, making the finals in the 5000 meters, after winning the US Olympic Trials in Eugene at that distance.
She also competed for Team USATF in the 3000 at the 2008 world indoors in Valencia, Spain, the 2009 world cross country championships in Amman, Jordan, and the 5000 meters at the 2009 world outdoor championships in Berlin, Germany.
Culley's coaching resume includes stops at Loyola University in Baltimore, and American University in Washington, where she was an assistant under Matt Centrowitz, the father of 2016 Olympic 1500m gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz. The elder Centrowitz was also coaching Culley from 2007-10, while she ran professionally.
Culley has been involved in the retail side of the sport, as a co-owner of Pacers Running specialty stores with husband Chris Farley in the DC area.
Culley replaces former Western Washington University runner Steve DeKoker, who left Brooks a few months ago to become the sports marketing manager at On Running in Portland.
GEORGETOWN ALUM SPENCER BROWN TO TRAIN WITH BROOKS BEASTS...
Brooks also announced that Georgetown alum Spencer Brown (photo courtesy Brooks Running), who was coached by Culley, will be training with the Brooks Beasts with the intent of becoming a full-fledged member. His contract with Brooks runs through the end of 2021. If he hits certain performance standards, his contract will be extended and he becomes a member of the Beasts.
Brown, who owns personal bests of 1:49.19 (800m), 3:39.94 (1500m), 3:59.97i (mile), and 8:11.67i (3000), ran in four NCAA championship meets for the Hoyas, receiving All-America honors in 2017 as part of their distance medley relay team.
The Georgetown grad is also the man behind "The Athlete Special" on both YouTube and Instagram. His digital presence has captured the attention of countless young and ambitious runners by documenting the “realness” of what it’s like being a collegiate runner and highlighting the highs/lows of training, competing, etc.
While he considers himself a runner first and foremost he secondarily considers himself an “influencer” and finds great joy in being able to give an inside glimpse of how hard work and dedication can pay off.
