EUGENE--All the months of training are done.
Now all they have to do is run, jump and throw.
The road to next month's Covid-19 delayed Olympics in Tokyo goes straight through Hayward Field at the University of Oregon beginning Friday at noon.
Washington's Jonah Wilson (photo courtesy UW Athletics) and Washington State alum Brock Eager get day 1 started, as they compete in the qualifying round of the men's shot put and hammer throw.
The top 12 advance to the finals, with the men's shot put finals starting at 6:30 pm, and the men's hammer set for Sunday.
Federal Way HS alum and former University of Oregon standout Hannah Cunliffe returns to her home track for first round action in the 100 meters, with the semis and finals set for Saturday.
Four women with ties to Washington state will run in the first round of the 1500 meters, including Camas' Alexa Efraimson, UW volunteer coach Alli Cash, Karisa Nelson of the Brooks Beasts, and Washington alum Eleanor Fulton.
Tacoma native and Oregon alum Marcus Chambers, who thought that he would not be running in the meet as he was short of the qualifying standard, will get to run in the 400 meters, thanks to a number of scratches.
Drew Windle and Brannon Kidder of the Brooks Beasts, who were 2017 and 2019 world championship team members in the 800, look to begin their quest to add an Olympic team berth to their international competitive resume.
Allie Buchalski of the Brooks Beasts, along with Alli Cash will run a semifinal heat in the women's 5000.
Day 1 of the US Olympic Trials ends with the men's 10000, as Tacoma native James Mwaura becomes the first Gonzaga athlete to compete at the Trials. He'll be joined by Kirkland native Dillon Maggard.
