Washington's Elijah Mason finishes sixth in NCAA discus final...

EUGENE--
Washington's Elijah Mason (photo courtesy UW Athletics/NCAA Photos) finished sixth in the discus to earn his second career first team All-America honors to highlight the conclusion of the men's competition at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

His series came with plenty of drama, as Mason was sitting in 10th-place after two rounds, and needed an improvement if he wanted to get into the top-9 to earn three more attempts, and a chance to score. The Pac-12 champion came through, going 189-4 (57.72m) on that third throw to move up to sixth.

In the finals, no one was able to bump Mason down, as he held on to sixth and scored three points for the team.

Arizona State's Turner Washington, who did not compete at the Pac-12s at USC last month due to injury, won with a throw of 208-1 (63.42m).

The men's 1500 saw Washington State's Paul Ryan make a late charge to finish eighth inn 3:40.50 and score the Cougars' only points of the meet.

Ryan found himself less than a full second off the leader after 1100-meters, which led to a close finish where  he was just five seconds off as the pack crossed the finish line.

The Huskies' Sam Tanner wound up 10th overall in 3:41.78, as Oregon's Cole Hocker won in 3:35.35.

Washington's Isaac Green came through in the men's 5000 with his 12th-place finish in 13:27.26, the first Husky ever under 13:30. It smashed the previous outdoor school record of 13:35.20 set by Colby Gilbert in 2016, and was six seconds faster than the indoor 5k record set at this year's NCAA Indoor meet by Andrew Jordan, of 13:33.61.

Gonzaga's James Mwaura, coming back from the 10000 two nights before, finished 17th in a time of 13:36.43, as Oregon's Cooper Teare won in a meet record 13:12.27, the second fastest time run outdoors by a collegian.

In the 3000 steeplechase, Colton Johnsen of Washington State took the early lead but faded, and finished 12th in 8:46.89.

Bremerton native and former Eastern Washington standout Keshun McGee was 23rd in the triple jump, with a best of 50-4 (15.34m).

The Cougars' Mitch Jacobson finished the 2021 outdoor season in the high jump finals, where he unfortunately  no heighted in his three attempts at 6-feet 10 3/4 inches (2.10m).

Bothell native and former Husky Ryan Croson ran the third leg on Baylor's 4 x 400 relay team that finished ninth in 3:05.14, as he split 45.38.

Washington's Ida Eikeng is in second in the heptathlon with a first day score of 3672, 162 points behind Tyra Gittens of Texas A&M.

Eikeng ran a personal best 13.37 in the 100 hurdles, then high jumped 5-5.25 (1.66m).

She won the shot put with a best of 47-10.75 (14.60m), then ran a personal best in the 200 of 24.19.

Pac-12 heptathlon champ Lyndsey Lopes stands 12th at the break with 3364 points. She ran 13.70 in the hurdles, and also cleared 5-5.25 (1.66m). She then threw the shot 36-4 (11.07m), then ran 24.46 in the 200 to conclude day 1.
