Eastern's Quintin Porterfield wins two events in first day of Big Sky decathlon...



POCATELLO, Idaho--
After the first day of competition at the Big Sky Combined Events championship, Eastern Washington's Quintin Porterfield (photo courtesy EWU Athletics) and Race Treat find themselves in scoring position in the decathlon, while Maggie Nelson, who entered the heptathlon ranked number three in the conference, finds herself in sixth place at the break.

Porterfield currently sits in third place with a five-event score of 3649 points, while Treat stands seventh with 3407 points, as Chase Gardom of host Idaho State University has the lead with 3726 points.

Porterfield, who was fifth in the decathlon last year, got off to a good start, winning both the 100 (11.09) and the long jump (23-7.5/7.20m).

He hung onto the lead after three events, despite finishing 11th in the shot put with a throw of 35-3.25 (10.80m), then lost the lead after the high jump, where he only cleared 5-10 (1.78m).

In the 400, he recovered to clock the second fastest time of the day, running 50.27, as Gardom cemented the first day lead by winning in 49.42.

Treat's day included running the 100 in 11.14, then a leap of 22-2.5 (6.77m) in the long jump. He threw 38-8.25 (11.79m) to tie for third in the shot put, then jumped 5-8.75 (1.75m) before finishing the day with a 54.05 400m dash.

The Eagles' Parker Linhart-Wubbena (2931), Elijah Conley (2663) and Chris Homen (2371) are in 14th, 15th & 16th place. Conley didn't clear a height in the high jump, and Homen didn't finish the 400.

Nelson started her day by running 15.58 in the 100 hurdles, then cleared 5-2.25 (1.64m) in the high jump to finish third in the event. She finished second in the shot put, throwing 38-10.5 (11.85m), then ran a wind-aided (+2.4, multis legal) 26.89.

Teammate Hayden McAuliff stands in 11th at 2114 points. Brianna Hagler of Idaho State leads at the break with 3243 points.

Nelson, who is the Big Sky Conference leader in the javelin at 158-8 (48.37m) is expected to move up in the standings after that event. She is an 18-foot long jumper, and a 2:28 800 runner.

SEATTLE U SET TO HOST WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS STARTING THURSDAY...

In Seattle, Seattle University is set to host the Western Athletic Conference track & field championships starting Thursday at Husky Track on the campus of the University of Washington.

"This weekend is a big deal for Seattle U," said head coach Kelly Sullivan. "The WAC is one of track and field's best and oldest sustained conferences in the country and possesses one of the greatest legacies. Any first is never done again and I'm very proud to bring this championship to Seattle for the first time. The majority of student athletes and coaches from the conference's new additions haven't ever had the chance to come to Seattle and we are all excited to host them for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Our alums, former coaches and current team are thrilled to have the opportunity to host such a great event."

The decathlon 100m kicks off the meet at 9:30 am at Husky Track, while the heptathlon 100 hurdles commences at 10:15 am.

Four field event finals--the women's and men's hammers, the women's pole vault, and the women's javelin will be contested, with the women's hammer starting at 10 am.

Heats of the 1500s, 200s and 400 hurdles get the track portion of the meet started at 4:30 pm, while the men's 10000 at 7:00pm, and the women's 10000 finals at 7:45 pm concludes day 1.

Nicole Whittern of the Redhawks is the defending Western Athletic Conference champion in the javelin, but is currently ranked eighth in the conference entering the championships.

Based on the conference's descending order list, SeattleU's best chances for a podium (top 3) finish lie with Maya McCabe (w800), Gus Harquail (m 3000 steeple), and Whittern.

Grand Canyon is the favorite in the men's competition, while Abilene Christian is the favorite for the women's team crown, according to the WAC's pre-championship meet coaches poll.
