Beasts' Marta Pen Freitas in finals of European Indoor champs Saturday; outdoor season opens...


Marta Pen Freitas of Portugal and the Brooks Beasts, along with former University of Washington standout Jack Rowe of Great Britain are competing Saturday in the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkiye.

Pen Freitas actually got going Friday in the semifinals of the 1500 meters, as she finished second in her heat behind Great Britain's Laura Muir, with Muir winning the heat in 4:23.20, and Pen Freitas 1/10th of a second behind at 4:23.30 to earn one of the three automatic qualifying berths from the heat to the finals.

Rowe goes in the first of two semifinal heats of the men's 3000 Saturday morning at 10:00 am local time (11:00 pm Friday night in Seattle). The top six in each of the two semifinals plus the three fastest time qualifiers advance to Sunday's final at 8 pm local time (9:00 am Sunday morning in Seattle).

Pen Freitas runs in the finals of the women's 1500 at 8 pm local time (9:00 am Saturday morning in Seattle).



Locally, the 2023 outdoor track and field season begins Saturday in Tacoma, as a group of athletes from Seattle Pacific, Western Washington, Saint Martin's and Central Washington head to the University of Puget Sound for the Ed Boitano Invitational.

The meet actually started Friday with the men's and women's 10000 meters, while the hammer competitions were staged at Pacific Lutheran University on Friday.

Results for both those events were not posted on the timing site, but will be posted with the rest of the meet Saturday.
