Western's Jeret Gillingham & Andrew Oslin head to top of NCAA D2 at Boitano Invitational...

TACOMA--
In the season opening outdoor meet of the 2023 season, three marks set by Western Washington athletes highlighted competition at the Ed Boitano Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound.

In Saturday's portion of the meet, Jeret Gillingham (WWU Athletics photo), who won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference steeplechase crown two years ago, looked like a man on a mission to get that individual title back, winning the event in 8:55.62, just short of his personal best of 8:55.30 set in winning the GNAC title in 2021.

For the time being, his time leads NCAA Division II by a substantial margin, and is well under the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 9:12.36.

In Friday's portion of the meet, junior Andrew Oslin and sophomore Ryan Clough went 1-2 in the men's 10000. Oslin won in 29:41.91, and Clough followed behind in 29:55.94, well under the NCAA provisions mark of 30:28.78.

They currently have the two fastest times so far this season in Division II.

PEN FREITAS FINISHES SIXTH IN 1500 FINALS; ROWE ADVANCES IN 3000M AT EURO INDOOR CHAMPS...

In Istanbul, Turkiye, Marta Pen Freitas of Portugal and the Seattle based Brooks Beasts finished sixth in the finals of the women's 1500 at the European Athletics Indoor Championships at Ataköy Arena in the Turkish capital city.

Pen Freitas ran a season best 4:07.95, as Great Britain's Laura Muir won in 4:03.40 after starting the race from the back of the pack.

In the mens 3000 meter semifinals, former Washington Husky Jack Rowe of Great Britain comfortably advanced to the finals with a fifth place finish in 7:57.29.

Rowe ran at or near the front for the duration of the race, saving his energy for Sunday's final when it was clear he'd advance as one of the six auto qualifiers from each of the two preliminary heats.

Sunday's final will be contested Sunday night at 8 pm local time (9:00 am Sunday morning in Seattle). You can watch the European Indoor Championships via this link, as well as replays of the previous three days of competition.
