ANALYSIS: Washington's nine D1 & D2 cross country teams at the quarter pole (part 1)...

We are at the quarter pole in the 2024 collegiate cross country season, and here's my quick takes on what I've seen so far from Washington's nine NCAA Division I and II schools:

DIVISION I

WASHINGTON: The Huskies are so far who we thought they were, to paraphrase the late Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings head coach Dennis Green.

At the Nuttycombe Invitational, the Washington women started slowly, going through the 2k point in a tie for third, and worked their way onto the lead by the time 4k was completed. The Dawgs stretched out the lead over the final 2k, led by Penn transfer Maeve Stiles (Paul Merca photo) in eighth in 20:17, and Julia David-Smith in 12th in 20:24.

Duke transfer Amina Maatoug was 27th in 20:39, followed by Chloe Foerster in 29th in 20:41, then India Weir in 34th in 20:48 for a 1-5 split of 31 seconds.

The men, who came in ranked 27th nationally, more than punched above their weight, riding to a fifth place finish led by Tyrone Gorze and Leo Daschbach in 27th and 28th place, running 23:59 and 24:00 for 8k...
