Johan Correa & Ramon Rodriguez finish 5-6 for Wildcats at Charles Bowles Invitational...
In Salem, Oregon, Central Washington All-American Johan Correa (Paul Merca photo) was the Wildcats' top finisher with his fifth place finish at the Charles Bowles Invitational Saturday morning, hosted by Willamette University Saturday at Bush's Pasture Park and McCulloch Stadium.
Correa and teammate Ramon Rodriguez went early with a pack of five others early, but could not hang on, as a trio of runners from the College of Idaho, led by eventual winner Daniel Butler, pulled away.
Butler took the win in 23:48.
Correa finished fifth in 24:00, one spot ahead of Rodriguez, who finished in the same time.
For the Wildcats, their next runner was Luke Hurd in 31st in 25:04, followed by Will McGonigal in 37th at 25:08, and Jack Pratapas rounded out the scoring five in 45th at 25:20, giving Central a 1-5 split of 80 seconds.
The College of Idaho, the fourth ranked team nationally in the USTFCCCA NAIA coaches poll, won the meet with 43 points, with UC Irvine second at 58. The Wildcats were fifth with 114 points.
In the women's 5k, Hannah Pidduck led the way for Central in 30th place in 18:33. Payton Conover was 32nd in the same time, while Beatrice LeGore was their third runner in 50th at 18:49.
Helena Bonilla was 72nd in 19:15, and Heidi Gill was the final scorer in 84th at 19:23.
Emilie Langschwager of Hawaii won the race in 17:04. Saint Mary's of California won the team title with 56 points, while Central was eighth with 219 points.
Grabowski ran 21:30 for a nine-second win over Kate Donaldson's 21:39, with teammate Jasmine Nguyen third in 21:54.
Lauren Hoyt was among a quartet of Washington State Cougars who finished in the top ten, running 21:57 in fifth.
Amanda Nygard of Eastern Washington was their top runner across the line in 15th in 23:05 (all Eastern Washington runners were entered as unattached).
Gonzaga won the women's team title with 26 points to Washington State's 42.
Brody Kemble of Northwest Nazarene won the men's 8k by one second over Gonzaga's Logan Schwartz, running 24:31 to 24:32.
The Zags put eight runners inside the top ten to easily take the team title with 21 points.
