Washington alum Lindsay Flanagan finishes ninth at Chicago Marathon...
Flanagan set a personal best of 2:23:31 with her ninth place finish, to better her previous PB of 2:24:43, set at the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia in 2022.
For the UW grad, this was her third career top ten finish at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Previous to Sunday's race, Flanagan had finished tenth in 2021, and seventh in 2019.
Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya won the race in an astounding 2:09:59, becoming the first woman to break the 2:10 barrier, obliterating the previous world record of 2:11:53 set by Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia set at the Berlin Marathon last year.
Remarkably, only ten men ran faster than Chepngetich Sunday.
John Korir of Kenya won the men's race in 2:02:43, the second fastest time ever recorded in Chicago behind the world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum last year.
Seattle Pacific alum Turner Wiley finished 19th with a time of 2:11:55, a four second improvement over his previous personal best set on this course in 2022.
