All nine Washington schools gather in Spokane and Seattle for undercover meets at the Podium & Dempsey...


Washington's nine Division I and II schools are in action as the 2025 indoor track and field season truly gets rolling Friday with the Spokane Sports Showcase and Spokane Indoor Challenge Friday and Saturday at The Podium, while on the west side of the Cascade Mountains, the University of Washington plays host to the UW Indoor Preview Friday and Mile City on Saturday.

Central Washington, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga women, and Washington State will have near full squads for the meets in Spokane, while Saint Martin's, Seattle, Seattle Pacific, and Western Washington will converge onto Dempsey for Friday and Saturday's meet hosted by the University of Washington.

All of the nine Washington schools except for Eastern Washington will have a presence in the distance races at the UW Preview and Saturday's Mile City.

For Friday's Spokane Sports Showcase, which is limited to Division I schools, teams from USC, UCLA, Cal, Sacramento State, Fresno State, Idaho, Boise State, and Montana State, Eastern Washington, WSU, and Gonzaga will have athletes competing, plus some select post collegians.

The Spokane Indoor Challenge will have a few select events Friday evening, with the rest of the meet happening Saturday.

Besides many of the Division I schools, athletes from Central Washington, Whitworth, Spokane Community College, Bushnell, and more are in the field.

In one of the feature events of the day, Washington State All-American Michaela De Mello (Paul Merca photo), goes against UCLA’s Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck, who represented Belgium at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, along with Yasmin Brooks, formerly from the University of Kentucky.

USC's Johnnie Blockburger, an All-American in the 400 meters, drops down in distance to the infrequently run 300 where he'll face former Husky All-American Daniel Gaik.

Gaik returns to Eastern Washington, where he started his college career before competing at the UW the last two years.

Other notable women to watch include Egypt Simmons of Eastern Washington in the long jump, and Washington State's Tatum Moku in the pole vault.

The Spokane Sports Showcase starts Friday at 10 am with four field events. The women's 60 hurdles qualifying gets action on the track started at 10:30 am.

The Spokane Indoor Challenge starts Friday night at 7 pm with action on the track in the men's 5000, followed by heats of the women's and men's distance medley relay.  The only field events contested are the men's high jump and weight throw.

The rest of the meet starts Saturday at 10 am.

UW PREVIEW AND MILE CITY...

The Dempsey Indoor has a new purple surface after years of racing on the track, and the athletes who step onto the track starting at noon will have the first crack at breaking it in.

The first event is the men's weight throw and the women's 60 hurdles qualifying at noon., and goes until about 7 pm with the women's and men's 4 x 400 relay.

Some of the top women's events include the 400 featuring Western Washington's Bec Bennett; the 600 featuring Stanford's Roisin Willis; a potential battle in the 1000 meters between Sinclaire Johnson and Gabija Galvydyte, along with Portland's Laura Pellicoro,  Pellicoro is also listed in the 800 with a field that includes Washington's Amina Maatoug and San Diego State's Lauren Harper. 

Katie Osika is the top entry in the women's 3000 meters along with Stanford's Zofia Dudek and recent Stanford graduate Melissa Tanaka. 

Best women's field event is the high jump featuring Hawaii's Lillian Turban.

Saturday's top section of the women's Mile City includes Stanford 800 meter Olympian Juliette Whittaker, Jenn Randall, former Oklahoma State star Gabija Galvydyte, and Canadian world championship competitors Addy Townsend and Grace Fetherstonhaugh. 

The short men's races at the UW Preview features WSU alum Ray Ray Wells in the 60, and world U20 4 x 400 relay gold medalist Alex Rhodes of Puget Sound. Rhodes, who entered the transfer portal in the fall, will finish out his sophomore season at UPS before moving on to the University of Washington next fall.

In the 800m, Portland's All American steeplechaser Estanis Ruiz drops down in distance against the UW trio of Cole Lindhorst, Justin O'Toole, and Kyle Reinheimer. Cal Poly's Aidan McCarthy, an NCAA 800m scorer for the Mustangs two seasons ago, goes against a field in the 1000 that includes Washington commit Josiah Tostenson from Crater HS in Oregon, the defending Oregon 6A champ in the 1500 and 3000.

The men's 3000 is loaded, headed by Stanford's Cole Sprout and Washington State's Evans Kurui, along with Briton Henry McLuckie, and Canadian Olympian Rory Linkletter. Western Washington's Kevin McDermott, who won the indoor distance triple at the GNAC championships is in the field, along with Washington commit Owen Powell from Mercer Island HS.

Garrett Brown of Stanford in the pole vault, along with the Huskies' Prestin Artis in the long jump, and Stanford's Sam Liukumovich in the shot put, headline the field events.

Saturday's Mile City has in the field Washington alums Joe Waskom and Sam Ellis, and Oregon alum Sam Prakel, all of whom train as part of Husky men's coach Andy Powell's pro group. 

They'll go against the Huskies' Justin O'Toole, Kyle Reinheimer, Ronan McMahon-Staggs, Leo Daschbach, and school record holder in the 800, 1500 and 3000 Nathan Green. Kurui is entered in the mile as well, along with UW commit Owen Powell.

As always, start lists for all four meets this weekend are subject to change.

MOLL TWINS AND SCOTT TONEY OFF TO POLE VAULT SUMMIT...

Three notable non entries to Friday's UW Preview are defending NCAA indoor pole vault champion Hana Moll, along with her twin sister Amanda, and grad transfer Scott Toney.

All three will open their season instead at the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada Friday night.

The Moll twins, who both scored at the NCAA outdoor meet and competed at the US Olympic Trials, will go against a field that includes Rutgers alum Chloe Timberg, who beat the Molls to win the NCAA outdoor title.

Toney, who was fifth at last year's NCAA indoor championships for Penn, and qualified for both the NCAA outdoor and US Olympic Trials, is in the second section of the elite men's field.
