Both Washington squads stay ranked in latest USTFCCCA index; Central Washington moves up in D2...
NEW ORLEANS--Both University of Washington squads were out of action last weekend, and with no individuals competing last week, the men's team finds itself out of the national top five for the first time this season.
The Husky men, led by their milers (UW Athletics photo) find themselves ranked number seven in the latest USTFCCCA Division I National Indoor Track & Field Rating Index released Tuesday morning.
The nation's top five men's teams are, in order: USC, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and North Carolina.
The Red Raiders and Tar Heels each moved up three spots from last week's rating index to leapfrog then number 4 Washington and number 5 Florida.
Other teams from the Big Ten in the national top 25 include number 11 Nebraska, number 12 Illinois, and number 19 Iowa.
Washington's women's squad maintained their position as the nation's number 13 team despite being idle last week.
The nation's top five women's teams are: Texas Tech, Arkansas, Oregon, Illinois, and Stanford.
Other Big Ten teams in the top 25 include number 12 Nebraska, number 16 USC, and number 22 UCLA, which moved up 33 positions to get into the national top 25.
Washington hosts the Husky Classic, which is its final home meet of the 2025 season Friday and Saturday. The men's and women's distance medley relays on Friday is expected to be one of the meet's premier events, with potentially the best field assembled this season, including Stanford, BYU, and Northern Arizona.
The Huskies, with all of their middle distance depth, have not run a distance medley relay this season.
DIVISION II...
Thanks to three national top ten marks over the weekend by jumper Emy Ntekpere (CWU Athletics photo) and sprinter E'Lexis Hollis, Central Washington moved up 12 spots to number eleven in the women's Division II National Track & Field Rating Index.
At the Riverfront Invitational in Spokane last weekend, Ntekpere came through with the nation's number one mark in the triple jump, bounding 42-1.25 (12.83m) to finish third overall.
Sprinter E'Lexis Hollis ran to the number 2 time in D2, running 7.32 over 60 meters, and followed it up with a time of 23.94 in the 200 for the seventh fastest time in Division II.
Lauryn McGough just missed a national top ten mark in the pole vault, soaring 13-2.25 (4.02m) at the Riverfront Invitational.
Western Washington dropped six spots in the national rankings to number 18, while Seattle Pacific dropped six positions to number 24.
The top five women's teams in the country are: Minnesota State, Grand Valley State, Pittsburg State, Azusa Pacific, and Adams State.
Simon Fraser is the only other GNAC team in the national top 25, sitting at number 17.
On the men's side, none of the four Washington schools are ranked in the national top 25. The only GNAC school in the top 25 in this week's index is number 18 Alaska Anchorage.
The top five men's teams in Division II are in order: Grand Valley State, Pittsburg State, Colorado School of Mines, Wingate, and West Texas A&M.
For the schools in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, this is the final weekend of competition before the conference championship meet on Monday February 17-Tuesday February 18th.
The four Washington schools will have smaller than normal teams competing at either the Husky Classic in Seattle or the Whitworth Invitational in Spokane because of the short turnaround, with the primary focus on those individuals the coaching staffs deem to be on the bubble.
There is no qualifying standard to compete at the GNAC championships, but there is a squad limit, so coaches will have to be judicious in who makes the trip to Spokane.
