British 3:52 miler Tyler Bilyard from University of Birmingham commits to Washington...
The University of Washington's reputation as a place where middle distance runners want to go to get better just took another step forward.
According to an Instagram post, Tyler Bilyard (second from right/photo courtesy University of Birmingham), who last week ran a personal best 3:52.73 in his season opener at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, announced that he has committed to attending the University of Washington this fall.
Bilyard currently attends the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where he sports personal best of 1:47.36 at 800, 3:38.02 at 1500, and 7:53.03 for 3000.
He's won two British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) indoor 1500 titles in 2023 and 2024, and is the reigning BUCS champ outdoors at that distance.
He was seventh in the British championships in the 1500 last summer, where he ran 3:40.89.
He'll join a roster that currently has ten who have broken 4 minutes in the mile this season alone, plus current freshman Nathan Neil, who broke 4 for the first time last week, but competed as an unattached athlete.
Add to that incoming freshman Owen Powell from Mercer Island High School, who threatened 4:00 when he ran 4:01.14 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, plus the small group of pro runners training at the UW under Husky coach Andy Powell, and you have a recipe for sustainable long term success.

The University of Washington is expected to formally announce Bilyard's commitment soon.
