Huskies gain two transfers in miler Reuben Reina Jr and 800m runner Jenica Swartz...
On its Instagram account, the University of Washington announced that Reuben Reina, Jr. (photo courtesy Arkansas Athletics) and Jenica Swartz have signed with the school.
Reina, Jr., a native of Springdale, Arkansas this winter equalled a 48-year old school record set by Niall O'Shaughnessy when he ran 3:55.40 at the Arkansas Invitational on January 17th.
Reina won the SEC title in the mile, and qualified for the NCAA indoor championships where he got as far as the semifinals.
He was eighth in the SEC outdoor championships in the 1500, and got the last qualifying spot to the NCAA championships.
At the NCAAs, he was ninth in his semifinal heat.
Reina, who is the son of 1992 US Olympian Reuben Reina, Sr, has personal bests of 7:44.92 at 3000 meters, and 13:41.76 at 5000 meters.
Reina joins a group of milers that includes incoming freshmen Owen Powell and Josiah Tostenson, along with Thomas Diamond and Tyler Bilyard.
Earlier in the day, Washington also announced the signing of Canadian Jenica Swartz, who attended the University of Saskatchewan.
The native of Lacombe, Alberta placed third at the Canadian national championships at 800 meters, where she ran a personal best of 2:02.46.
Swartz will be competing as a graduate student.
Meanwhile, Washington will lose sprinter Kapiolani Coleman, as she announced on Instagram that she's transferring to UCLA.
