Ava Washburn of UW sets two personal bests in long and triple jumps in Tucson...
TUCSON--Competing in their final regular season meet, both the University of Washington and Eastern Washington sent a contingent of sprinters, jumpers and throwers to compete at the Desert Heat Classic at Drachman Stadium, hosted by the University of Arizona.
The Huskies' Ava Washburn (Paul Merca photo) set significant personal bests in both the long and triple jumps.
Washburn, the daughter of Jarrod Washburn, who pitched 12 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, and won a World Series ring with the Anaheim Angels, opened her day with a second place finish in the long jump, soaring 20-8 (6.30m), to finish second, and going to number 5 in school history, with the best mark by a Dawg since 2007.
Later in the day, she went to number 7 in school history in the triple jump with a best of 40-9.5 (12.43m) in a seventh place finish.
In the men's triple jump, the Huskies' Roman Hutchinson and Trevontay Smith went 3-4, going 50-8.75 (15.46m) and 49-11 (15.21m). Eastern Washington's Dieumerci Migani was sixth at 48-11 (14.91m).
Sofia Coscullela, who currently leads NCAA D1 in the heptathlon, lowered her personal best in the 100 hurdles, running 13.31. She was fourth overall in a race won by former world record holder Keni Harrison, who ran 12.65, just ahead of former WSU Cougar Micaela De Mello, now at Oregon, who ran 13.09.
The women's javelin trio was strong once again, as Ashley Schroeder had her third-straight meet over 170-feet, going 171-9 (52.36m) for fourth-place. Saydi Orange threw 164-9 (50.23m) for fifth, and Leonie Troeger had a season's-best of 157-3 (47.94m) for ninth.
Twins Hana and Amanda Moll went 1-2 in the women's pole vault, but the field was beaten by the winds.
Both Molls cleared a best of 14-1.75 (4.31m), with Hana winning on fewer misses.
Freshman Veronica Vacca was fourth at 13-7.75 (4.16m), the same height as former Cougar Eva Lowder of Grand Canyon, who was sixth. The Huskies' Sara Borton and former Cougar Tatum Moku of Grand Canyon tied for seventh at 13-1.75 (4.01m), while UW's Avril Wilson was ninth at the same height.
2016 Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi of Greece failed to clear her opening height of 13-7.75 (4.16m).
The Huskies' Jimmy Rhoads finished third in the men's pole vault, clearing a best of 18-2.5 (5.55m), as Oregon alum Cole Walsh won at 18-6.5 (5.65m).
On the track, Eastern Washington's Jordyn Grady set a personal best in the women's 400 hurdles, running 58.48 to finish fourth in a race won by Nebraska's Kelsie Bequest in 55.60.
Washington's Jonathan Frazier set a season best in the 400 hurdles, running 50.69 to also finish fourth. Arizona's Yan Vasquez won in 49.85.
Former WSU Cougars John Paredes (13.41) and Parker Duskin (13.62) of Arizona finished 3-4 in the 110 hurdles, while Maddy Shekhawat of Eastern Washington was sixth in 13.85.
Another former Coug, Mason Lawyer of Arizona, was third in the 100m in 10.22.
EAGLES GET PAIR OF WINS IN CORVALLIS...
While most of the Eastern Washington squad competed in Tucson, another group was in Corvallis for day 2 of the OSU High Performance meet at the Whyte Track & Field Complex, hosted by Oregon State University Saturday.
Zoe Dunn won the women's triple jump, bounding a wind-aided (+2.7) 40-9 (12.42m), as the Eagles went 1-3-6.
Dunn was second earlier in the day in the long jump, going 18-8 (5.69m).
Eastern got another win in the open section of the women's 800, as Ifechi Okoye won in a personal best 2:11.07. Teammate Sara Sanders was third in 2:13.39.
