Former Brooks Beast Jessica McClain helps Team USA earn silver at World Road Running Champs...
After eventual winner Agnes Ngetich of Kenya broke away from the pack early, establishing a ten second lead after only 5k of the race, McClain was part of a group of ten runners that made up the chase group.
By the time the race reached the 10k mark, that group whittled down to eight runners, with McClain, who now lives in Phoenix, trying to hang on.
McClain finished the race in seventh place in a time of 1:06:53, a new personal best, and was the third American across the line.
Ahead of McClain were teammates Emma Hurley in a personal best 1:06:23 in fifth, and Weini Kelati in 1:06:35 in sixth.
The trio earned the USA a team silver medal with a cumulative time of 3:19:51.
Ngetich ran away with the individual title, setting a new women's race only world record of 1:05:15.
She also led Kenya to the women's team title, as she, Veronica Loleo, and Daisilah Jerono combined for a time of 3:17:33.
Washington alum Jack Rowe of Great Britain did not finish in the men's half marathon race, dropping out after the 15 kilometer mark.
Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the individual race in 58:06.
WEEKEND NOTES...
On Saturday in Tacoma, Central Washington ran a B squad at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational and finished fifth in the women's team race, scoring 187 points.
Julie Johnson led the way for Central, running 23:04 over the 6k course.
Saint Martin's finished eleventh in the 15-team field with 286 points, led by Kekaimalino Halpern, who was ninth in 22:33.
Former Saint Martin's standout Alauna Carstens, now running for Evergreen State, won in 20:51.
George Fox won the team title with 35 points.
Saint Martin's finished sixth in the men's 8k team race with 157 points.
The Saints were led by Ryan Koenninger, who placed 19th in 26:13.
London Haley of Whitworth won the individual title in 24:28, while George Fox won the team crown with 44 points.
Both Central and Saint Martin's are scheduled to run full teams in Saturday's Bill Roe Invitational, hosted by Western Washington, in Ferndale this Saturday.
