Western Washington men maintain number 9 national ranking in latest USTFCCCA D2 poll...

NEW ORLEANS--
Western Washington's men's squad (Jeff Evans/WWU Athletics photo) maintained its number nine position in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division II men's cross country poll released Wednesday morning.

In their season opening meet in Ferndale on September 26th, the Vikings put all five of their scoring runners inside the top ten, led by Jared Alderfer's second place finish in 24:08.

The Vikings ran a 1-5 split of 43 seconds, as they took the team title by a 31-46 count over Trinity Western of Canada.

There was no change in the national top five in D2. Wingate, Colorado School of Mines, Adams State, Grand Valley State, and Western Colorado are the nation's top five men's teams.

Western Oregon is the only other school from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the men's national top 30, coming in at number 23.

No GNAC teams are ranked in the national top 30 women's poll.

The nation's top five women's teams are in order: Adams State, Grand Valley State, Wingate, Colorado School of Mines, and Western Colorado.

All four Washington D2 schools are idle this weekend. Both Western Washington teams and Central Washington's women's squad next compete at the Lewis Crossover in Romeoville, Illinois, which is one of the country's top Division II invitationals.
