Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle breaks Australian national record at Chicago Marathon...

CHICAGO--
University of Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle (Mike Scott photo) finished sixth Sunday morning at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and in the process broke the Australian national record in the event.

Batt-Doyle, who graduated from Washington in 2019 as an All-American in the 10000 meters and won the Pac-12 title in the event, worked her way onto the top ten shortly before the 20-mile mark of the race after passing through the half marathon mark in 1:10:29.

Over the next four miles, she was behind eventual top American Emma Grace Hurley, but started chipping away at Hurley's gap, which was 40 seconds at 20 miles, then 17 at the 24 mile mark.

At the 25 mile mark, Batt-Doyle closed to within five seconds of Hurley, then two seconds with a mile to go.

A 5:13 final mile moved Batt-Doyle up from eighth to sixth, as she crossed the line in a national record 2:20:38.

The previous Australian national record of 2:21:24  was set by Jessica Stenson last December at the Valencia Marathon.

Ethiopia's Hawi Feysa clocked 2:13:33 to win her second straight Chicago Marathon women’s title, finishing ahead of Kansas alum Sharon Lokedi by 34 seconds.

Kenya's Amos Kipruto won the men's title with a time of 2:01:09.

Seattle Pacific's Avery Erickson was the Falcons' top runner across the line, finishing sixth in 26:47.

The Vikings easily won the team race with 20 points, followed by Club Northwest's 49 points, and Seattle Pacific's 101 points.

In the women's 6k race, Seattle Pacific took the team title over Western Washington by a 29-39 margin.
