Tyson Invitational and WWU Padden Invitational on the docket as last regular season meets...
With the regular season winding down, and teams starting to taper for the start of championship season beginning with the state's Division I teams next weekend, only Gonzaga and Washington State are active, while three of the four Division II schools are racing this weekend.
As a tribute to retiring coach Pat Tyson (Paul Merca photo), Gonzaga will host the first annual Tyson Invitational at The Course Spokane Valley Friday, with the women's 6k race starting at 3 pm, and the men's 8k commencing 45 minutes later.
Gonzaga will run two athletes of significance Friday in Camille Broadbent and Nina Yeats, both of whom ran in the WCC championship meet last year as well as the NCAA West Regional race. Both have not raced this season so far.
Besides host Gonzaga, Washington State will send a women's team, comprised of athletes trying to secure a spot for next week's Pac-12 championships in Boise.
Central Washington will run full squads in both the women's and men's races, as well as Seattle Pacific. The rest of the field includes smaller schools from the Inland Empire region.
Saint Martin's was originally slated to compete at the Tyson Invitational, but has opted not to.
The only other meet of significance this weekend happens Saturday morning at Lake Padden Park in Bellingham, as Western Washington hosts the WWU Padden Invitational.
The men's 8k begins at 10 am, while the women's 6k goes an hour later.
Among GNAC schools, Simon Fraser and Alaska Anchorage are in the field, while local clubs will have a presence.
For all the Division II schools competing both at the Tyson Invitational and the WWU Padden Invitational, this is the final regular season meet of the season before the GNAC championship meet on November 7th in Monmouth, hosted by Western Oregon.
