Bellevue native Katie Burnett doesn't finish 50 k walk at Pan Am Games...
LIMA, Peru—Bellevue native Katie Burnett (left/photo by Kim Spir) did not finish in the women’s 50 kilometer walk Sunday morning on the final day of competition at the Pan Am Games, the quadrennial multi-sport event featuring countries from North, Central and South America.
Burnett, who had walked a 50 k on the track in San Diego on July 15th, setting an unofficial world best of 4:29:45.56, dropped out shortly after passing the 35 kilometer mark.
She was in sixth or seventh in the ten-woman field for the first half of the race, then found herself slowing significantly over the next ten kilometers before dropping out.
Burnett will have less than seven weeks to recover and prepare for the IAAF World Championships, where she will walk the 50k race in Doha, Qatar.
Johana Ordonez of Ecuador won the Pan Am title in 4 hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds.
