Husky alum Gianna Woodruff advances to the finals in 400 hurdles at Pan Am Games...
In Lima, Peru, University of Washington alum Gianna Woodruff (above/photo courtesy Pan Am Games) advanced to the finals in the women’s 400 hurdles on Tuesday afternoon at the Pan Am Games.
Competing in the second of two semifinal heats, Woodruff, who finished at the UW in 2015, ran 56.70 to finished fifth in her heat, and advance to the finals on time (top 3 from each heat plus the two fastest time qualifiers).
Albany alum Grace Claxton, representing Puerto Rico, won the heat in 56.30.
Woodruff, who has a season best of 55.91, set on July 28th at the Trinidad and Tobago national championships to go under the world championships standard of 56.00, will run in the finals on Thursday at 5:55pm, local time (3:55pm in Seattle).
No athletes with Washington ties will compete Wednesday.
In addition to Woodruff on Thursday, the University of Washington indoor and outdoor record holders in the women’s pole vault—Diamara Planell Cruz, and Olivia Gruver, will square off against each other, along with former Pullman resident Katie Nageotte.
The women’s pole vault final gets underway at 3:25 pm local time (1:25 pm in Seattle).
Planell Cruz, who is competing for Puerto Rico, holds the UW indoor school record in the pole vault at 14-7.25 (4.45m), while Gruver holds the Husky outdoor school record and collegiate record at 15-6.25 (4.73m).
Nageotte finished second at the Toyota USATF Outdoor championships two weeks ago in Des Moines, Iowa. She recently moved to the Atlanta area to follow former WSU vault coach and UW alum Brad Walker after he resigned his position at the end of the school year.
The Pan Am Games are televised on the networks of ESPN and the ESPN app.
