Sam Prakel takes second in Sir Walter Miler race in Raleigh...

RALEIGH, North Carolina—Despite a storm delay, University of Washington volunteer coach Sam Prakel (left/photo by Paul Merca) finished second in the annual Sir Walter Miler one mile race contested at Meredith College Friday night.

Prakel, the 2018 Pac-12 1500 meter champ at the University of Oregon, had a spirited battle with Great Britain’s Chris O’Hare over the last 400 meters before O’Hare prevailed in a time of 3:54.81 to Prakel’s 3:54.90.

Meanwhile, David Ribich of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts finished sixth in the race, running a personal best of 3:57.83. His previous best was 3:58.09, set in Dublin, Ireland last year.

No women with Washington ties competed in this year’s race.

USATF UPDATES PAN AM GAMES TEAM...

Apologies for completely overlooking this, but last week while we were in transit to Des Moines for the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, USA Track & Field updated the roster for the Pan Am Games track & field team, which begins competition on August 6th in Lima, Peru.

The revision of the roster came about after several athletes, including Pasco native Marisa Howard, filed a grievance against USATF, stating that the federation went against its published selection criteria that it posted (marks made in 2019 up until mid-June) by selecting athletes who used a combination of marks set in 2018 AND 2019.

Howard was put on the team, based on her mark of 9:41.50 set at the Portland Track Festival on June 9th.

She will be joined on the team by fellow Boise State alum Allie Ostrander of the Brooks Beasts in the steeplechase.

Other athletes with Washington ties on the revised Pan Am squad included Alexa Efraimson (w1500), Katie Nageotte and Olivia Gruver (wPV), Kara Winger (wJT), and Katie Burnett (w50K walk).

Efraimson, Nageotte, Gruver, Winger and Burnett were on the original roster announced on June 24th, along with Izaic Yorks (m1500), Mel Lawrence (w Steeple), and Garrett Heath (m 10000).

No men with Washington ties are on the revised Team USATF roster.

The revised roster and USATF release are available here.

Other athletes with Washington ties entered in the Pan Am Games include Husky alums Gianna Woodruff of Panama in the 400 hurdles and Diamara Planell Cruz of Puerto Rico in the pole vault.

The Pan Am Games entry list is available here, while the meet time schedule is available here.

NOTE:  Rhodes Race Timing, USA Track & Field, and the 2019 Pan Am Games organizing committee contributed to this report.
