Katie Nageotte finishes second in pole vault at Zürich Wednesday...

While the main portion of the meet isn’t scheduled until Thursday, the Zürich Weltklasse meet got underway Wednesday night with the women’s pole vault contested inside the Zürich Main Train Station.

Former Pullman resident Katie Nageotte (left/photo by Mike Scott) finished second in an exciting competition behind Russia’s Anzhelika Sidorova.

Nageotte, who started the day with a second attempt make at 15-1.75 (4.62m), skipped the next height of 15-5.75 (4.72m), then cleared the next height of 15-9.75 (4.82m).

After Sidorova cleared the eventual winning height of 15-11.75 (4.87m) on her first attempt, Nageotte passed to 16-1.75 (4.92m), knowing that a first attempt make at 15-9.75 wouldn’t overtake Sidorova for the lead.

Both Sidorova and Nageotte missed all three attempts at 16-1.75, thus giving Sidorova the win at 15-11.75.

While the Zürich Weltklasse meet is the 13th stop on the IAAF Diamond League tour, the women’s pole vault was not a Diamond League scoring event. Nageotte, who is currently fifth in the Diamond League standings in that event, will jump in the finals of the pole vault at next week’s Van Damme Memorial in Brussels to close out the Diamond League tour.

No athletes with Washington ties are entered in the Zürich Weltklasse meet.
