Centrowitz runs personal best in mile in final tuneup before Tokyo...

PORTLAND--In his final tuneup before leaving for Tokyo on Sunday, 2018-19 University of Washington volunteer coach Matthew Centrowitz (Paul Merca photo) set a personal best in the mile at the Centro Mile staged at Jesuit High School Saturday night.

In what was showcased to be an attempt at breaking the American record in the mile of 3:46.91 set by Alan Webb in 2007, Centrowitz was paced by Bowerman TC teammates Josh Thompson and fellow 2018-19 Husky volunteer coach Amos Bartelsmeyer, who also is heading to Tokyo to run the 1500 at the Olympics.

Bartelsmeyer took Centrowitz to 1000 meters in approximately 2:21 after crossing the half mile mark in 1:51.65 before stepping off the track.

Centrowitz was left to run the last 609 meters by himself, as he crossed the 3/4 mile mark in 2:51.24, the slowest lap of the race, before finishing with a 57.86 last 440 to stop the clock in a time of 3:49.26.

Seattle residents Sam Prakel and Tripp Hurt finished second and third respectively on 3:57.92, and 3:57.95.

Centrowitz' time puts him as the number 5 performer all time in American history, and eclipses his previous personal best of 3:50.53, set at the 2014 Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

Complete results of the Centro Mile are available here.
