Dawgs take BYU in featured women's DMR at UW Invitational...
SEATTLE--If there is one thing that is guaranteed, it's that whenever the distance medley relay teams of the Brigham Young Cougars and the Washington Huskies get together, it's going to be a fast race.
Friday night was no exception, as the Huskies got the best of the Cougars in the featured women's distance medley relay on the first day of competition at the UW Invitational.
Madison Heisterman got the Dawgs off to a good start, running an unofficial leadoff leg of 3:21 on the 1200, before handing off to Carley Thomas, who ran about a 54 second leg on the 400.
Thomas then gave the baton to Anna Gibson (Paul Merca photo) for the 800 leg, where she proceeded to run about a 2:07 leg on the 800, before passing off to All American Allie Schadler, who ran about 4:38 to give the Dawgs a final time off 11:00.83, currently the second fastest time in NCAA Division I behind Arkansas, who ran 10:51.63 earlier in the day.
BYU's squad of Kate Hunter, Meghan Hunter, Claire Seymour, and Lexy Halladay finished second in 11:06.24, followed by Utah in 11:18.95.
UW program head Maurica Powell did a little bit of experimenting with her quartet Friday night, having each of her four runners run under the distance they would normally run. Powell plans to tinker with her lineup over the next few meets.
Other highlights:
In addition to the distance medley relay victory, Aaliyah Wilson in the 60 hurdles (8.67), Anthony Smith in the 200 (21.61), and weight throwers Connor Jost (70-6.5/21.50m) and Beatrice Asomaning (62-8/19.10m) earned wins for the Huskies.
Seattle Pacific's Annika Esvelt finished second in the women's 5000 in 16:31.74, a time which is currently the second fastest in Division II.
The Western Washington men's distance medley relay team of Kevin McDermott, Mark Daniels, Landon Sturdevant, and Mac Franks finished second in a time of 9:54.13 behind Utah State's winning time of 9:52.76.
For the Vikings, that set a new school record, breaking the old record of 9:55.0 set in 2007. Western is currently ranked fourth in Division II, as three schools ran faster earlier in the day in Boston, including conference rival Simon Fraser, who ran 9:38.04.
Hunter Flick of Western Washington set a new school record in the 60 hurdles, running 8.07 as he was edged out by Long Beach State's Joseph Anderson, who won in 8.05. Flick is ranked number 12 in D2 after Friday's results.
The meet resumes Saturday starting at 9:30 am.
