THE WEEKEND AHEAD: Large field returns to Dempsey for UW Invitational Friday & Saturday...


A field of over 700 athletes will take over the floor of Dempsey Indoor Friday and Saturday as the University of Washington hosts the UW Invitational, starting at 3 PM Friday.

Friday's schedule features the 60m hurdles, 200-meters, and the first 5000-meter races and distance medley relays held this year in the Dempsey, as well as the weight throws and high jumps. Saturday gets going again at 9:30 a.m. and will continue until approximately 4:30 p.m.

In addition to the host Huskies, Washington schools entered in the meet include Washington State, the Gonzaga men, and squads from Seattle Pacific, SeattleU, Western Washington, and Central Washington.

From the Pac-12, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, UCLA, and Utah will all be represented.

The most notable pros entered are Tokyo Olympian and 5 time US national champ Erica Bougard (Paul Merca photo), who is entered in the 60 hurdles and the 200 as she preps for the USATF indoor championships in the pentathlon.

In addition to Bougard, the Nike Oregon Track Club is sending a small group that includes Tokyo Olympic 1500m 9th placer Jake Heyward of Great Britain, and Washington alum Mick Stanovsek in the featured men's mile, along with Villanova alum Angel Piccirillo, a US Olympic Trials qualifier at 800 meters.

Speaking of the men's mile, the Huskies' Kieran Lumb is entered, along with cross country All-American Brian Fay, who has already dipped under 4 minutes as an undergrad in Ireland are entered. 

Nico Young and Drew Bosley of reigning NCAA cross country champions Northern Arizona, who ran 4:02 and 4:08 respectively in 7000-foot altitude, make the trip to sea level Seattle to see if they can get under 4.

In other action, Camas' Alexa Efraimson and Olympia native Brooke Feldmeier are entered in the  800 meters at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston.

Efraimson is also entered in the mile. In both events, she'll go up against Vancouver native Lindsey Butterworth, a Canadian Olympian and world championships competitor.

The women's mile begins at 11:40 am, Seattle time, and the 800 goes an hour later.

Finally, Eastern Washington will make the trip south to Moscow, Idaho to compete in the Idaho Team Challenge meet on Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

The meet is generally a preview of the Big Sky Championships, with the Eagles, the University of Montana, and the host Idaho Vandals battling it out.
