THE WRAP: Lake Stevens HS grad Taylor Roe wins Big 12 cross country champs...

Here's the weekend wrap-up on how Washington athletes performed in the various conference cross country championships outside the leagues involving Washington schools:

At the Big 12 championships in Ames, Iowa on Saturday (10/28), Lake Stevens native Taylor Roe (file photo courtesy OSU Athletics) of Oklahoma State took home her first career Big 12 championship on the grass after coming so close several times in her career, with finishes of second, third and second the past three season at the conference meet. Roe took control of the race from the beginning, separating herself over the last 1,000 meters to defeat teammate Billah Jepkirui for the title.

Roe, who ran 19:36 over the 6k course, is the first Cowgirl to win the Big 12 title in cross country in the 28-year history of the conference and first conference individual champion since Heather Garrett took gold at the 1989 Big 8 Championships, also in Ames.

Roe's OSU squad finished second to BYU by a 35-39 count.

In the men's 8k race, Roe's Oklahoma State teammate Jonas Price, a product of Yakima's Eisenhower HS, finished ninth in a time of 23:07, helping the Cowboys secure its fourth straight Big 12 title.

In Tallahassee, Florida, Woodinville native Olivia Markezich helped lead Notre Dame to a second place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference championships on Friday (10/27), hosted by Florida State University.

Markezich, the defending NCAA steeplechase champion, was the Irish's first runner across the line, taking fourth place with a time of 19:39 over the 6k course.

Olivia's twin sister Andrea, the former University of Washington standout who was eighth at last year's Pac-12 championships, finished 23rd in a time of 20:29 for the Irish.

In Eagle, Idaho, former Washington runner Sarah Carter of Colorado State led the Rams to the Mountain West championship, winning the 6k race by five seconds in 19:49.

The Rams had all five scorers in the top 15, and their top three inside the top 7.

Carter's story at Colorado State is even more remarkable after enduring four stress fractures in nearly three years, and being cut from the Washington squad before entering the transfer portal and signing with Colorado State.
