Eastern's Ryan Rieckmann rifles big personal best in javelin at Oregon Preview...


Eastern Washington's Ryan Rieckmann (Paul Merca photo) highlighted day one of the Oregon Preview Friday night at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Rieckmann started off slow, and was behind for most of the competition. However, in the sixth and final round, he put it all together, tossing the spear a personal best 234-7 (71.51m), eclipsing his previous best of 221-5 (67.49m).

With a number of meets happening around the country this weekend, the mark is currently the eighth best in NCAA Division I.

Other highlights from Eugene:

--Central Washington's NCAA D2 qualifier Emy Ntekpere finished second in the women's high jump with a best of 5-7 (1.70m), the second best mark in Division II; 

--Saint Martin's Cassidy Walchak-Sloan took the early D2 national lead with her sixth place finish in the 5000, running 16:40.76; 

--In the men's steeplechase, Western Washington's Jeret Gillingham took the early national lead, running 8:52.33.

The Oregon Preview resumes Saturday.


In Spokane, Washington State's Neema Kimtai dropped down in distance and won the women's 800 to highlight the Buc Scoring meet hosted by Whitworth University at the Pine Bowl Friday.

Kimtai ran 2:08.43 to hold off Gonzaga's Ellie Armbruster, who ran 2:08.97 in second.

The Cougars' Nana Gyedu won the women's shot put with a throw of 51-0.25 (15.55m).

Sarah Kovich of Washington State maintained her first day lead and won the heptathlon with a final score of 4634 points.

She won the long jump with a mark of 18-3 (5.56m), then took second in the javelin, throwing 115-8 (35.27m), then coasted to a time of 2:49.06 in the 800.
