Isaiah Harris & Kieran Lumb advance in first day of world indoors...

GLASGOW, Scotland--
Both Isaiah Harris (Paul Merca photo) of the Brooks Beasts and Washington alum Kieran Lumb easily advanced to the next round as the World Athletics Indoor Championships opened Friday at Emirates Arena.

In the morning session, Harris ran a season best of 1:46.12 in the fourth of five first round heats to finish second and earn an automatic spot into Saturday's semifinals.

Harris was third at the 200 mark, then dropped slightly to fourth at 400 meters, running 52.96.

He got himself back in position at the 600 mark, opening up a gap of almost a second, then held off a late charge by France's Benjamin Robert to hang on to second place, as Mariano Garcia of Spain won the heat in 1:45.81, while Robert was third in 1:46.16

Robert also advanced as one of the two time qualifiers for Saturday's semis, which will be contested at 4:30 am Pacific time (12:30 pm Glasgow time).

Lumb was also an automatic qualifier, as he finished second in the third of four heats of the men's 1500, running 3:45.66.

The pace was pedestrian, with the leader going out in 65.54, with Lumb in seventh at 66.34 through 400. At the 800 mark, the pace picked up to around 62 seconds for the next 400, with Lumb positioned in second.

He then went to the front, forcing the issue as the Canadian national champion at 1500 dropped it down to 57 seconds for the next 400, pulling away before Isaac Nader of Portugal caught him with less than a half lap to go, but was comfortably ahead to ensure a spot in Sunday's finals.

Saturday, former Pullman resident Katie Moon looks to add the only world title she hasn't won in her career, as she goes in the pole vault finals at 11:05 am Pacific (7:05 pm in Glasgow).

Also Saturday is one of the most anticipated races of the entire meet, as Edinburgh native Josh Kerr of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts goes in the finals of the men's 3000 at 12:40 pm Pacific (8:40 pm Glasgow time).

Peacock ($) and CNBC will offer coverage of the world indoor championships Saturday.

OUTDOOR SEASON OPENER FOR SPU, WWU & SMU AT ED BOITANO INVITE...

Believe it or not, three of Washington's four Division II schools will open the 2024 outdoor track and field season Saturday, as Seattle Pacific, Western Washington, and Saint Martin's head to Tacoma for the annual Ed Boitano Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound at Baker Stadium.

Action at Baker Stadium on the University of Puget Sound campus begins at 11:00 a.m. both on the track and in the field, However, the women's and men's pole vault have been switched from Saturday to Friday, and will take place at Pacific Lutheran University's indoor facility.

Spectators looking to watch the meet should be prepared for the elements at Baker Stadium.

The forecast calls for cold with a spotty rain or snow shower in the morning, and more showers possible in the afternoon. A chance of hail? It's in the forecast. Potentially some thunder? Yup, that's in there, too. Temperatures could climb into the low 40s, but will feel more like the mid 30s.
