Brian Fay gets second in 5000m for Ireland at Euro Champs-2nd Division...

In Maribor, Slovenia, Washington alum Brian Fay (Athletics Ireland photo) went to the lead with 600 meters to go, but fell short in his attempt to give Ireland the maximum 16 points for the win in the men's 5000 at day 1 of the European Athletics Team Championships-2nd Division at the Atletski Stadion Poljane Saturday.

Belgium's Isaac Kimeli and Fay were the two top seeds in the race based on personal bests, and they were near or at the front for most of the race, content to let others lead early.

As per a championship type race, the pace was fairly pedestrian through the first two kilometers, which was around 5:46.

The pace marginally picked up as the leaders went through 3000 in 8:37, then was upped to 11:24 at the 4000 mark.

Fay jumped from third to first with 600 to go, putting pressure on the field by throwing a 62 on the penultimate lap, but Kimeli countered with a 53.68 on the final lap to win in a time of 13:55.70 to Fay's 13:56.07.

Fay's final lap was 54.28.

It was a rough go for Washington's NCAA 1500 meter champ Sophie O'Sullivan, as she finished eighth in her section of the 800 in 2:12.87.

O'Sullivan never was in contention from the start, and appeared to be laboring throughout the race.

Austria's Caroline Bredloinger won the event in 1:58.95.

After 20 of 37 events, the Irish stand fifth with 191 points. Belgium (241), Norway (226), and Slovenia (213.5) are the top three teams going into Sunday's final day.

The top three teams will be promoted to the First Division for the Team Championships in two years, while the bottom three teams are relegated to the Third Division.

Washington State alum Brock Eager was eighth at 230-9 (70.35m).
