Brian Fay & Sophie O'Sullivan tune up for Tokyo world championships in Germany Tuesday night...
With less than ten days to go before the start of competition at the World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Tokyo on September 13th, a quartet of Washington alums competed Tuesday night at the Volksbank Trier Eifel Twilight meet in Trier, Germany.
Washington alum Brian Fay (photo courtesy Athletics Ireland), who is confirmed to compete for Ireland in the 5000 meters, dropped down in distance, and finished 14th in the top section of the men's 1500 meter run, running 3:39.13.
Samuel Chapple of the Netherlands won in 3:31.65.
Another alum, Eleanor Fulton, finished second in the women's 1500, running a season best 4:04.40, as fellow American Taryn Rawlings won in 4:03.78. Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle dropped down in distance from the 10000 which she'll run in Tokyo to run a season best 4:17.79 to finish eleventh.
In what may be concerning heading into the world championships, Washington's NCAA 1500 meter champion Sophie O'Sullivan of Ireland finished ninth in the women's 800, running 2:11.77, as Germany's Majtie Kolberg won in 1:59.52.
O'Sullivan, who the Irish federation selected to compete in the 1500 in Tokyo after meeting the qualifying standard at last year's Olympics in Paris, sustained an injury after winning the NCAA championships for the Huskies, according to UW program director Maurica Powell.
She's only raced three times since the NCAA championships: an 800 at the end of June: an 800 at the European Athletics Team Championships Second Division in Maribor, Slovenia, where she finished eighth in 2:12.87; a 1500 in Brescia, Italy on July 15th, where she ran 4:10.76 to finish fifth; and Tuesday's race over 800 meters.
