WEEKEND WRAPUP: UW alum Kayley DeLay finishes second at New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile...
In New York, Washington alum Kayley DeLay (Paul Merca file photo) finished second in the women's pro race at the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile on the streets of the city just east of Central Park.
DeLay was part of a group of runners in pursuit of early leader Karissa Schweizer on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Schweizer, the defending champion, faded over the last 300 meters and was overtaken by eventual winner Gracie Morris, who ran 4:16 down the point-to-point course that starts on East 80th Street and finishes near East 60th Street.
DeLay, who finished off her European tour in Manchester on August 30th where she ran 9:28.39 in her belated 3000 steeple season debut after injuring her arm in the spring, made a late close and caught Schweizer steps before the finish, as both were timed in 4:18.
Washington alum Eleanor Fulton was fourth in 4:19, while Woodinville native Olivia Markezich was 17th in 4:27.
In the men's pro mile, Seattle resident Sam Prakel was ninth in 3:50, while Waleed Suliman and Brannon Kidder of the Brooks Beasts finished together in 15th and 16th in 3:53.
Washington alum Luke Houser, who was in contention early but faded, finished outside the top 20 in 3:59.
Yared Nuguse took the victory with a late surge, winning in 3:48.
