Katie Burnett finishes 32nd in 35k racewalk to open world championships...


TOKYO--
The World Athletics Championships--Tokyo 2025 got underway Saturday morning at Japan National Stadium with two early events involving Washington athletes.

In the first final of the championships, Bellevue native and Evergreen State assistant track and cross country coach Katie Burnett (Paul Merca photo) finished 32nd in the women's 35 kilometer race walk.

In her sixth 35k race of the year both on the road and track, Burnett finished with a time of 3:14:13, well off her season best of 3:04:17 set in May.

Burnett was the third of three Americans across the line, Maria Michta-Coffey was the top American in 3:05:02.

Maria Perez of Spain won the race in 2:39:01.


In the qualifying round of the mixed 4 x 400 relay, Washington State alum Jasneet Nijjar (Paul Merca photo) could never get out of the hole, as her Canadian squad finished ninth in the first of two heats. 

The Canadians finished the heat in a time of 3:18.94, as the USA won the heat in 3:10.18.

In the evening session that begins at 2:05 am Pacific time, Walla Walla's Kenneth Rooks and Washington alum Ed Trippas go in the mens' steeplechase semis.

Recent Washington grads Sophie O'Sullivan and Amina Maatoug run in the heats of the women's 1500 at 3:50 am Pacific.

Finally, Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle and Lake Stevens native Taylor Roe run in the finals of the women's 10000 at 5:30 am Pacific.

Saturday evening's session will be aired on CNBC and Peacock ($).

KURUI CRUSHES HIS OWN COURSE RECORD IN WINNING COUGAR CLASSIC...


In Colfax, Washington State's All-American Evans Kurui (photo courtesy WSU Athletics) broke his own course record in winning the Cougar Classic Friday evening at the Colfax Golf Course.

Kurui finished in a time of 22:23 as the Cougs put the first three runners across the line.

Solomon Kipchoge, the Texas Tech transfer, was second in 22:33, also under Kurui's old meet record of 22:47 set in last year's meet.

Washington State won the team title by a 26-34 count over Gonzaga, who was led by Bryce Cerkowniak in fourth in 23:47.

Central Washington was fourth with 124 points, followed by Eastern Washington in fifth with 132.

Seattle University was ninth with 243 points.

In the women's 6k, Washington State put the first eight runners and nine of the top ten across the line to score a perfect 15.

The Cougs were led by Rosemary Longisa, who won in a course record 19:33.

Azalea Groleau of SeattleU finished ninth in 21:40.

Behind Washington State's perfect 15, Eastern Washington was second with 77 points, followed by Central Washington's 97.

SeattleU was fifth with 122 points.
