Eastern announces Karson Hahn as its new cross country & distance coach...

CHENEY--
Eastern Washington University announced that Karson Hahn (photo courtesy EWU Athletics) has been named as the new cross country and distance coach of the Eagles, replacing Sam Read, who became the head coach at Drake University.

"After a grueling nationwide search that started in mid-August, I am extremely excited to welcome Karson Hahn to Eastern Washington University," said Tucker in a statement released by the school.

"The search committee hit a home run with this hire! I was extremely intentional in bringing someone into this conference that had a lot of experience coaching elite middle- and long-distance runners. We got that in Karson for sure. We knew immediately in our first conversation he was the guy—from his enthusiasm to his training philosophy, and his ability to develop. Karson is impressive, and I know our student-athletes that run the 800m and up are going to be in great hands."

Hahn joins Eastern after two years at UMass Lowell, where he served as assistant track and cross country coach. With the River Hawks, he directed training for men's middle-distance athletes, assisted with all other distance groups, coordinated recruiting, and helped manage major competitions, including the NCAA Indoor Championships, which UMass Lowell co-hosted at the TRACK at new balance in 2024.

Before his time at UMass Lowell, Hahn spent a season at Binghamton University as an assistant coach, leading recruiting efforts, supporting student-athlete academics, and ensuring NCAA compliance.

At Binghampton, he helped coach an NCAA All-American and sixth-place finisher in Emily Mackay (Paul Merca photo), an All-America Honorable Mention and both America East runner-up cross country teams in 2022.  Mackay would later make the 2024 US Olympic team and the 2025 world championships team in the 1500 meters.

In the spring of 2023, he helped coach another NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase as well as an America East champion in both the mile and 1500m.

He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Purdue University in the 2019 season, working with both the men's and women's programs while developing national recruiting pipelines. During his time at Purdue, he helped the Boilermakers qualify for the NCAA cross country championships, where they placed eleventh.

He received his Bachelors in Science from Eastern Illinois University and his master in Family and Consumer Sciences from the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The Eagles, fresh off competing at the UC Riverside Invitational last Saturday, next compete on October 4th at the Whitman Open in Walla Walla on Saturday.
