SEATTLE--It was what we thought it was.
In what was a glorified workout in school uniforms, the number 21 ranked Washington men's cross country team opened the 2025 season with a 15-40 dual meet win over cross town rival Seattle University in the traditional season opening meet at Warren G. Magnuson Park Tuesday morning.
The Huskies ran the absolute minimum number of runners in the men's 8800 meter race of five.
Isaac Briggs, Parker Mong, Jamar Distel and Thomas Diamond took turns running the point for the ten laps of the Magnuson Park gravel course. Briggs was credited with the win in 26:53, with Mong, Distel getting the same time, and Diamond fourth a second back.
Martin Barco, who was a sub-4 miler last indoor season as a freshman, was the Huskies' fifth scorer in 27:40.
SeattleU was led by Roman Radecki in sixth in 28:04, with Daniel Barreto seventh in 28:39. Porter Buck was eighth in 28:46, followed by Aidan Loeffleman in ninth in 28:56, and Seku Sanders in tenth in 29:02.
The women's 5400 meter race was more of the same, with the nation's number eight team winning by a 20-42 count.
SeattleU's Azalea Groleau (left/Paul Merca photo), who was seventh for the Redhawks at the Western Athletic Conference championships last year, pulled away from the group of Huskies on the final lap to win in 18:15.
Arkansas transfer Mia Cochran, who missed being a cross country All-American for the Razorbacks by one spot last fall, and was a scorer for the Huskies in the distance medley relay at the NCAA indoors last season, was designated by director of track and cross country to be the "co-pilot" of the lead group of Huskies.
She led Josephine Welin, Julia David-Smith, Samantha Tran, Ella Borsheim, Chloe Foerster, and Maeve Stiles in order across the line in 18:25.
Behind Groleau for SeattleU was Diana Camargo Solis in ninth in 18:54. She was followed by Lydia Dale in 14th in 19:18.
On the men's side, the Huskies sat out several athletes, most notably Big Ten 10000m champion Evan Jenkins, and Tyrone Gorze, along with heralded freshmen Owen Powell and Josiah Tostenson.
Washington heads to its annual pre-season camp for three weeks of training before they compete on October 3rd at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago. SeattleU returns to action on September 12th with the Cougar Classic in Colfax.
