Washington's Chloe Thomas finishes second at Canadian Cross Country Championships...
University of Washington graduate transfer Chloe Thomas (Paul Merca file photo) ran to a second place finish Saturday at the Canadian Cross Country Championships at the Fanshawe Golf Course in London, Ontario.
Thomas, a native of Dundas, Ontario, completed the 10k course in a time of 33:54 to finish behind Canadian national champion Ceili McCabe, a former West Virginia All-American and British Columbia native.
McCabe crossed the line under 33 minutes, clocking 32:58.
Thomas' second place finish assures her of a spot on Canada's world cross country championships team, which will be contested on January 10th for only the third time on North American soil in Tallahassee, Florida.
Thomas, who was a cross country All-American last year at the University of Connecticut, had already exhausted her NCAA cross country eligibility. She only has indoor and outdoor track eligibility remaining at the UW.
JULIA DAVID-SMITH NAMED TO FRENCH TEAM FOR EUROPEAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS..
Earlier this week, the French Athletics Federation announced the selection of Washington's Julia David-Smith to its women's Under-23 team for the European Cross Country Championships that will be contested on December 14th in Lagoa, Portugal.
David-Smith, a native of Issaquah and who holds dual citizenship, will compete in cross country as a member of the French national team for the first time in her career.
She competed for France this summer at the European U23 Championships on the track in the 5000, where she finished fourth in Bergen, Norway, then won the World University Games 5000 in Germany.
This fall, David-Smith had a minor setback, which caused her to miss the cross country season for the Huskies. She could have been available to run at the NCAA championships in Missouri last week, but would have lost a season of eligibility. She will use her final season of cross country eligibility next fall.
