SPOKANE--
Hurdlers, beware: Micaela De Mello (Paul Merca file photo) is back!

De Mello, who had her senior outdoor track season end before it began when she injured herself at the world indoor championships in Nanjing, China, roared to victory in her first race, winning the women's 60 hurdles at the Spokane Sports Showcase Friday at The Podium.

De Mello, who is out of indoor eligibility, competed in Spokane wearing her Brazilian national team kit. In the qualifying, De Mello finished third in 8.28 behind USC's Asjah Atkinson's 8.19 and Celeste Polzonetti of UCLA's 8.22 to advance to the finals.

In the finals, De Mello got a solid start and asserted herself over the last few hurdles to beat Polzonetti 8.13 to 8.14.

De Mello will complete her collegiate track eligibility this spring at the University of Oregon.

The men's 60 hurdles saw Eastern Washington's Maddy Shekhawat run 7.84 in the finals to finish second behind UCLA'S Otto Laing's 7.81.

In the men's and women's miles, the Zags took the top two spots in each races.

Anna Grabowski (4:56.30) and Jorun Downing (5:06.30) went 1-2 in the women's race, while Logan Schwartz (4:05.53) and Ryan Mitchell (4:06.48) did the same in the men's race.

Eastern Washington's Conner Wirth was third in 4:07.11.

Eastern Washington's Suzi Woodall was second in the women's pole vault, clearing 13-4.25 (4.07m).

In Seattle, most of the competition at day 1 of the UW Indoor Preview consisted of B sections of the mile and 3000, and men's and women's pole vaults and high jumps.

The men's and women's weight throw were the only top flight events contested.

In the men's weight, Calvin Gutierrez of Western Washington finished second with a throw of 58-5.25 (17.81m).

The women's weight throw saw Washington's Kaelynn Bahnmiller, who is redshirting this winter, finish second with a throw of 55-3.5 (16.85m).

Central Washington's Maliyah Gordon was third with a best of 54-7.5 (16.65m).
