Kurui leads Cougar sweep in 3000m at McCluskey Memorial; Swartz runs 9th fastest UW 800m time in NYC...
In Moscow, Idaho, the Washington State trio of Evans Kurui (Paul Merca photo), Josphat Meli, and Kutoven Stevens swept the top three spots in the men's 3000 to highlight the first full day of competition at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial meet at the Kibbie Dome on the campus of the University of Idaho, after the meet began Thursday with the combined events.
The trio for the most part ran together early, though Kurui and Meli dropped Stevens, the transfer from Oregon just past the 900 meter mark.
Kurui won in a time of 8:22.42, with Meli second in 8:35.29, and Stevens third in 8:26.25.
In the men's heptathlon that concluded Friday, Pry'nce Millman of Eastern Washington finished with a final score of 4949 points.
Millman's only win came in Thursday's long jump, where he soared 23-1.75 (7.05m).
Western Washington's Kaden Miller finished eighth with 3800 points, despite not clearing a height in the pole vault, after moving into sixth after the 60 hurdles.
Eastern Washington's Suzi Woodall led an Eagle 1-2-3 finish in the women's pole vault, as she cleared 13-9.25 (4.20m).
Alex Blecha won the men's pole vault for the Eagles with a clearance of 16-9.25 (5.11m).
The Lauren McCluskey Memorial concludes Saturday.
In New York, Washington's Jenica Swartz (Paul Merca photo) and Chloe Symon went 2-4 in the top section of the women's invitational 800 meters at the Dr. Sander Columbia Scorcher at the Armory, hosted by Columbia University.
The two went out at around 61 seconds through the first 400, with Swartz rallying to finish second overall in 2:04.93, and Symon fourth in 2:05.75
Cindy Bourdier took the overall win in a time of 2:03.09.
For Swartz, the mark is the ninth fastest in school history, while Symon goes under 2:06 for the second time this season.
Saturday, Chloe Foerster runs in the Pro-Elite section of the women's mile on Saturday at 11:24 am Pacific.
