Washington's Chloe Thomas sets personal best in 3000m in a battle of Canadians at UW Invite...
SEATTLE--Washington's Chloe Thomas (Paul Merca photo) set a personal best in a third place in the invitational women's 3000 meters to highlight competition at the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Friday afternoon.
In a battle of Canadians at the front of the pack, Erin Vringer of Utah took the win in 8:48.26, after Washington State's Zenah Cheptoo took command of the race after pacesetter Maleigha Menegatti stepped off the track after a mile.
Vringer finished just ahead of Canadian steeple Olympian Regan Yee, who finished second in 8:51.20, 7/100ths ahead of Thomas.
Yee and Thomas were on the same Canadian cross country team three weeks ago at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida.
Cheptoo did well to finish fourth in 8:53.90, while Washington's Julia David-Smith was fifth in 9:01.29.
In a very spirited men's invitational 3000, Luke Tewalt, a recent graduate and All-American at Wake Forest, won the race in 7:49.73, ahead of Syracuse alum Justyn Knight's 7:50.67 and Montana State grad Duncan Hamilton's 7:50.77.
Yakima native Jonas Price of the University of Portland was fifth in a personal best 7:52.86.
Other highlights:
--Rainier Beach HS alum Emmanuel "Ray-Ray" Wells ran away with the men's 60 dash in 6.62, as he got closer to the qualifying mark of 6.59 for the USA indoor championships at the end of February;
--In his UW debut, Alex Rhodes, last year's NCAA D3 indoor champ while at Puget Sound, finished second in the men's 400, running 46.90;
--Washington's Ava Washburn cracked 20 feet in the long jump for the first time in her career, soaring 20-0.5 (6.11m) to win the event.
Saturday, the meet continues at the Dempsey with the third running of Mile City, a full day of racing starting at 9 am and going until 6 pm with nothing but mile races.
The women's invitational miles will be at 1:45 pm, while the men's invitational miles will be at 2 pm.
Besides a full day of mile racing for all ages, there will be a women's invitational pole vault and triple jump at 11 am, and a men's invitational pole vault and triple jump at 2 pm.
MAATOUG FINISHES THIRD IN THE MILE AT JOHN THOMAS TERRIER CLASSIC...
In one of the feature races at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center, Washington alum Amina Maatoug finished third in the women 's invitational mile Friday night.
Maatoug missed her personal best of 4:26.39, as she ran 4:27.20.
Fellow UW alum India Weir finished seventh in the 3000 meters, running a personal best 8:51.14.
The meet continues Saturday with the men's portion.
