Cougars' Paul Ryan sets personal best in 1500m at Harry Jerome...
BURNABY, British Columbia--At the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic in Burnaby Thursday evening, Washington State rising senior Paul Ryan (left/photo by Paul Merca) set a personal best in the men’s international 1500 meters at Swangard Stadium.
Ryan, who qualified for the NCAA championships this past indoor season in the mile, but wasn't a factor at the outdoor regionals in Sacramento, ran 3:42.71 to finish second behind Canada’s William Paulson, the reigning Pac-12 champion and NCAA finalist from Arizona State, who ran 3:41.70.
Fellow Cougar Stephanie Cho, who redshirted the outdoor season, finished third in the women’s 400, running a personal best 54.23.
Washington’s Mick Stanovsek dropped down in distance and won the international 800, running 1:49.91.
Washington grad Fred Huxham was second in the men’s 3000, running 7:58.14, as Portland alum Reid Buchanan won in 7:55.09.
The Huskies’ Tanner Anderson was fifth in 8:09.84, one spot ahead of Gonzaga’s Yacine Guemali’s 8:12.11.
In the women’s javelin, Western Washington alum Bethany Drake finished third, throwing 162-10 (49.63m), while fellow Viking alum Katie Reichert was fifth at 160-1 (48.81m), as Ariana Ince of the USA got the win in a personal best 201-5 (61.41m), just short of the world championship qualifying standard.
Washington alum Eleanor Fulton finished 13th in the women’s international 1500, running 4:26.15.

HUSKIES' CASS ELLIOTT LEADS GROUP OF DAWGS AT USATF U-20 CHAMPS...
University of Washington freshman Cass Elliott leads a group of athletes from the University of Washington into Miramar, Florida for the USA Track & Field Under-20 Championships at the Ansin Sports Complex that start Friday, and finish on Sunday.
Elliott, who has competed in this meet the last two years while attending West Seattle HS, looks to improve from his fourth place finish in last year’s meet in Bloomington, Indiana.
Elliott will face a field that includes Arizona’s James Smith, who finished third, one spot ahead of him at the Pac-12 championships in Tucson last month.
Other Huskies entered include incoming freshman Marlena Preigh in the women’s 800, who was fourth at last week’s Brooks PR Invitational at Husky Track; freshman Makayla Kelby in the women’s shot and discus; Alex Slenning in the men’s steeplechase; and Zach Annanie in the men’s javelin.
Notable Washington high schoolers entered in the meet include Kate Jendrezak of Eastside Catholic in the women’s 800, and Issaquah’s Julia David-Smith in the women’s 1500.
The top two finishers in each event are eligible to compete for Team USATF at the Pan-Am U20 championships in San Jose, Costa Rica July 18-21st.
