Washington frosh Cass Elliott takes second in 400H at USATF U20 championships...

MIRAMAR, Florida—University of Washington freshman Cass Elliott (left/photo by Howard Lao) finished second in the men’s 400 meter hurdles at the USA Track & Field Under-20 (formerly Junior) Championships Sunday at the Ansin Sports Complex.

Elliott, who has run in this meet for the last three seasons, improved from his fourth place finish in this meet last year in Bloomington, Indiana as a senior at West Seattle HS.

As was the case at the Pac-12 Championships, it was Arizona freshman James Smith that finished ahead of him, with Smith, the nation’s top frosh who finished fifth at the NCAA championships, winning the national title in 50.29, with Elliott second in 51.30.

Husky assistant coach Jeshua Anderson told paulmerca.blogspot.com afterwards, “Cass ran real well, considering we made a minor change in his stride pattern between the hurdles,” explaining that he ran 14 strides between the first five hurdles, then switched to 15 strides between hurdles 6 through 8, and finishing with 16 strides.

Smith and Elliott will comprise Team USATF in the 400 hurdles at the Pan Am U20 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica next month.

Incoming Washington freshman Marlena Preigh from Colorado finished fourth in the final of the women’s 800, running 2:08.60, as Athling Mu won in 2:05.59.
