Washington easily wins SeattleU dual; Gonzaga squads dominate Clash of the Inland NW...

In Seattle, the nationally ranked University of Washington cross country squads easily emerged victorious in their annual dual meet against cross-town Seattle University Friday morning at Magnuson Park.

The opening men's 4-mile saw an upset, as Seattle University freshman Guiliano Scasso (Paul Merca photo) took the win, moving ahead on the final lap of the race running 20:27, as the six runners entered for the Huskies finished six seconds behind Scasso.

"I am super excited for Giuliano on his victory today," said Redhawk head coach Kelly Sullivan. "It was really impressive to watch him win and to do that as a true freshman was just great to see."

The Husky pack consisted of Isaac Mohn, Daniel Maton, Joe Waskom, Luke Houser, Leo Daschbach, and Sam Affolder. They all crossed within two seconds of each other, with Mohn, Maton, and Waskom in 20:33; Daschbach and Houser in 20:34, and Affolder in 20:35.

That was more than enough to give the Huskies the victory by a 20-39 count.

The Huskies, who reported to campus three days earlier, sat out several notable runners, including 5000m school record holder Isaac Green, and 2019 cross country All-American Tibs Proctor.

SeattleU's other scorers were Jay Grant (20:53), James Parker (21:10), Alex Franklin (21:22) and Gus Harquail (21:31).

The women's 3 mile race was decided fairly quickly, as Washington placed thirteen runners in front of the first SeattleU runner for a perfect 15-50 score.

Naomi Smith (Paul Merca photo) won the race in 16:16, with Madison Heisterman (16:21) outsprinting Julia David-Smith by a second.

Julia's older sister Camila was fourth in 16:34, while reigning Pac-12 cross country champ Haley Herberg was fifth in 16:43.

The Redhawks were led by Ellie Postma in 14th at 18:16, followed in order by Rowan Cuadrado (18:23), Lilianne Hargreaves (18:28), Emily Harris (18:32), and Abby Smith (18:52).
