Alaska Anchorage transfer Kaleb Korta leads Vikings to CWU XC Invite team title...
ELLENSBURG--The number 24 ranked Western Washington men's squad opened the 2021 season by placing all five scorers in the top nine to easily win the Central Washington Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.
The race was originally slated to be contested in Yakima, but smoky conditions in Yakima forced the host school to move the meet to Ellensburg.
The Vikings were led by Alaska Anchorage transfer Kaleb Korta (photo courtesy Western Washington Athletics), who finished second over the 6k course on the Central Washington campus, as he ran 19:40, 12 seconds behind winner Logan Hunt of College of Idaho.
Jeret Gillingham was fourth in 20:03, followed by Mac Franks in sixth at 20:10.
Sean Sands in eighth (20:14), and Jalen Javurek in ninth (20:14) rounded out Western's five scorers as they scored 29 points.
Ty Savely was Central's top runner in eleventh at 20:20. He was followed by Rajesh Gill in 18th (20:34), Shawn Clough in 20th (20:37), Trevor Allen in 24th (20:50), and Zack Sundt in 25th (20:50), as the host school finished fourth with 94 points in the 6-team meet.
In the women's 4k, the Vikings placed three runners in the top six, and all five scorers inside the top 20 as they finished second in the team race to College of Idaho by a 29-51 count.
Eugenia Palo led the charge for Western, with her fourth place finish in 15:57. Sophie Wright was fifth in 16:07, with Mia Crocker sixth in the same time.
Sophia Collins was 16th in 17:02, and Delphine Maurer was 20th in 17:11.
Kahea Figueira of College of Idaho won the race in 15:34.
Like the men's squad, host Central Washington finished fourth in the six-team competition with 83 points.
Kay Lester led the way for the Wildcats in tenth at 16:35. Central's other four scorers were Tailer Cochran in 13th (16:55), Madison Child in 15th (16:58), Kelli Heim in 18th (17:02), and Ryan Hyatt in 27th (17:43).

HOST OF WASHINGTON ATHLETES IN THE BIG APPLE FOR SUNDAY'S FIFTH AVENUE MILE...
A small group of athletes with Washington ties are in New York for Sunday's New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile along a 20-block stretch on the east side of Central Park.
The men's race is headlined by former Washington volunteer coach and three-time Olympian Matthew Centrowitz, a past winner of this race.
Current Washington volunteer coach Sam Prakel, who won the Yakima Mile on August 28th is in the field, along with Seattle resident Tripp Hurt.
In the women's race, Washington alum and British Olympian Amy-Eloise Markovc is one of four Olympians in the field.
Also in the field are Washington volunteer coach Alli Cash, Washington alum Eleanor Fulton, Pasco native Marisa Howard, and Yakima Mile winner Nikki Hiltz.
