THE WRAP: Host Saint Martin's squads finishes fourth at Ken Garland Classic...

On Saturday (9/25), Saint Martin's hosted the Ken Garland Classic on its campus course in Lacey after a year's absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With Western Washington sending its key runners to St. Paul the day before to run against national caliber competition at the Roy Griak meet, and Central Washington opting to rest their top runners, Northwest Nazarene was the only GNAC school besides the host to send a full men's and women's team to Lacey.

Southern Idaho swept both the men's and women's competition, winning the men's 8k race by a 35-48 count over Northwest University, with Northwest Nazarene third (64), Saint Martin's (89), and Western Washington (111).

In the women's 6k race, Southern Idaho was an easy winner over Northwest Nazarene by a score of 29 to 57, with Northwest University third at 71, and Saint Martin's at 74.

For Saint Martin's, Jack Farrell (photo courtesy SMU Athletics) finished eighth overall with a time of 26:24. Behind him, finishing second for Saint Martin's and 12th overall was Kainalu Pagente with a time of 26:34.

Western Washington's two finishers were freshmen Ethan Bursch (19th, 26:58) and Drew Weber (20th, 27:03).

Dylan Thompson led the Wildcat men, finishing in 24th with a time of 27:33. Garrett Hough took 32nd with a mark of 28:34. Jacob Barnert rounded out the men in 40th with a time of 30:49.

Tyler Shea of Northwest Nazarene was the overall winner in 25:36 on the course that will host next month's Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship race.

In the women's race, Sara Sabra led the way for the Saints, finishing sixth overall with a time of, 23:40.

Cassidy Walchak-Sloan finished 11th in 24:16, and Alisha Saucedo was the third runner to finish for Saint Martin's with a time of 25:00 in 19th.

WWU had only two student-athletes race in the women's 6K, with Delphine Maurer placing 15th (24:28) and Sophia Collins 18th (24:51).

For Central Washington, Caitlin Gohr was the top finisher in 26th, notching a time of 25:44. Three places behind her, Katelynn Strate finished with a time of 25:59. In 33rd was Madison Thompson in 26:59. 

Natalya Babcock of Southern Idaho was the women's overall winner at 23:19.

Western Washington will have this weekend off, while Central heads to Salem, Oregon for the Willamette Invitational on October 2nd. Saint Martin's will travel north to University Place for the Chambers Bay Collegiate Open hosted by Seattle Pacific on the course that will host the 2022 NCAA Division II championship race.
