WWU men finish second at Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota...

ST PAUL, Minnesota--The Western Washington men's cross country team fell four points short of winning the Maroon 8k race at the Roy Griak Invitational Friday morning at the Les Bolstad Golf Course, hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Vikings finished second behind Wayne State (Michigan) by a 68-72 count, led by the fifth place finish of Mac Franks (photo courtesy WWU Athletics), who ran 25:51 over the 8k course.

Kaleb Korta was 10th in 25:58, followed by Jeret Gillingham in 12th in 26:00.

Kevin McDermott placed 21st in 26:09, and Jalen Javurek rounded out the Viking scorers in 24th in 26:12.

Clayton Sayen from Michigan Tech won the race in 25:18, while team champion Wayne State placed three runners in the top eight.

"This was a very solid meet for us with great performances up and down the roster for the Vikings," said WWU head coach Pee Wee Halsell. "The men ran a smart race and it was exciting to see them go for the team title and the women gave it their all and had a great finish. It was fun to watch them run at a great event. We are excited going into the championship portion of our schedule and feel confident we will only get sharper the rest of the way."

The Viking women's squad finished in sixth with 209 points, as U-Mary took the team title with 64 points.

Ila Davis led WWU placing 27th, completing her collegiate cross country debut in 23:22 on the 6K course. Brittany Aquino was 33rd in her WWU debut finishing in 23:38 and Shawnee Konrad was 41st in 23:46.

Lindsay Cunningham of Winona State won the race in 21:45.

In the featured women's 6k Gold race for NCAA Division I schools, Gonzaga finished seventh with 179 points, led by Kristen Garcia, who finished 14th in 21:30.

Behind Garcia's 21:29.2 time, Elisabeth Danis was the Zags' next finisher in 30th place at 22:03, and Sadie Tuckwood (37th, 22:12), Alicia Anderson (47th, 22:21), Rosina Machu (51st, 22:26), Liz Hogan (60th, 22:38) and Makenna Edwards (73, 22:57) rounded out the rest of the Gonzaga squad.

Cailie Logue of Iowa State won the race in 20:58, while host Minnesota took the team title with 51 points.

In Monmouth, Oregon, the Eastern Washington women's team finished second in the Mike Johnson Classic hosted by Western Oregon University with a final team score of 78 points, as nationally ranked Division II squad Simon Fraser took a convincing victory, scoring 30 points.

The Eagles were led by Ellie Linnenburger's tenth place finish in 22:37.

Megan Pitzman was 16th in 23:02, followed by Jasmin Muneton in 20th at 23:15. Jenni Bissell was 21st in 23:18, and Kaylin Sheley was 22nd in 23:20.

Luz Garcia of host school Western Oregon took the win in 21:47.

In the mens 8k race, the Eagles' Justin Roosma took the lead just after the 5k mark, but could not hang on, as Portland's Justin Hazell challenged him late before winning in a time of 24:50, with Roosma finishing second in 24:51.

Noah Hasselblad finished inside the top ten, taking ninth in 25:33. Cameron Stuard was 21st in 26:00, followed by Carter Ledwith in 26:02, and Jesus Herrejon was 25th in 26:10.

Led by Hazell, Portland placed all five of its scorers in the top ten to take the team title with 26 points, while Simon Fraser was second with 47 points, followed by Eastern Washington in third at 69 points.

SAINT MARTIN'S TO HOST KEN GARLAND CLASSIC SATURDAY...

Saint Martin's University will host the Ken Garland Classic Saturday on its campus course in Lacey Saturday, with the women's 6k race starting at 10:50am, and the men's 8k getting underway at 11:40 am.

Central Washington is expected to send a group of younger athletes to Lacey, while Western Washington will send the majority of those runners who didn't travel to Minnesota for the Roy Griak Invitational.

For those athletes who are racing the Ken Garland Classic, this will be an opportunity to get a preview of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship course, which will be held on October 23rd.
