Brooks Beasts' Josh Kerr ends season on high note by winning Fifth Avenue Mile...
Under wet conditions on the streets of New York, Josh Kerr (Paul Merca photo) of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts ended his 2023 campaign with a victory in his second appearance at the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile.
Kerr, fresh off winning a world title in the 1500 meters last month in Budapest for Great Britain, won in 3:48, the third fastest time in event history and fastest since 1995. Great Britain’s George Mills was second in 3:50, followed by New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish in third in 3:50.0. Vincent Ciattei was the top American, finishing fourth overall in 3:51.
University of Washington volunteer coach Sam Prakel was sixth in 3:51, followed by training mate Johnny Gregorek in seventh at 3:52.
Kerr's Brooks Beasts teammate Henry Wynne was tenth in 3:53.
“It's a very different effort to run a mile down the street in flats versus running around the oval with spikes,” Kerr said. “I didn't have the performance I wanted to have last year, so I wanted to make that right. It's nice to end the season on a high, and it's difficult to do at any point in anyone's career at the end of the year. I've been training and racing for a long time this year and I was glad to put on a performance like that today.”
Kerr will not run the Wanda Diamond League finals this coming weekend at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.
Jemma Reekie of Great Britain won the women's pro race in 4:20.
LUMB BREAKS CANADIAN RECORD IN 3000M AGAIN...
Days after breaking the Canadian national record in the men's 3000 meters in Rovereto, Italy, University of Washington grad Kieran Lumb broke his own national record at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial – a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting Sunday evening in Zagreb, Croatia.
Lumb lowered his personal best from 7:38.92 down to 7:36.46, as he finished sixth.
Dominic Lobule of South Sudan took the win in a meet record 7:33.95 in a race where all but one finisher set a personal best.
