Qualifying standards for next year's world outdoor and indoor championships released...

PARIS--
World Athletics released Wednesday the qualifying standards for both the world outdoor track and field championships at Tokyo's National Stadium (photo courtesy Japan Travel) on September 13-21, 2025, and the world indoor championships in Nanjing, China on March 21-23rd.

As has been the case for recent global championships, the qualification system for the championships will be based on a combination of entry standards and world rankings. The entry standards have been set with the aim of qualifying about 50% of the athletes.

All road events will be held during morning sessions, while all other finals will take place in evening sessions. There will be morning sessions across both weekends, plus Monday 15 September - which is a bank holiday in Japan. The remaining weekdays will just have evening sessions.

The qualifying window for the marathon and 35km race walk is November 5, 2023 until May 4, 2025. For the 10,000m, 20km race walk, combined events and relays, the window runs from February 25 2024 to August 24 2025. For all other events, entry standards can be achieved starting today (August 1st) to August 24, 2025.

World Athletics has blocked the weekend of August 23-24, 2025 as a national outdoor championship window on its global calendar, so theoretically, USA Track & Field (or any other federation) can hold the national championships that weekend if it so chooses.

One change in qualifying for the 10000 meters is that the number of athletes qualifying from the Cross Country Tour is now down to three from eight. The marathon qualifying by placing in the top five of a Platinum Label race remains in effect.

CARLEY THOMAS RUNS SEASON BEST IN TOKYO...

One result we missed over the weekend was the On Track Nights meet in the Setegaya section of Tokyo last Saturday (27 July), where Washington alum Carley Thomas ran a season best of 2:00.02 in a second place finish over 800 meters.

Thomas finished behind fellow Australian Bendere Oboya, who won the race in 1:59.37.

SIR WALTER MILER FRIDAY IN NORTH CAROLINA...

Several runners with Washington ties will compete in Friday night's Sir Walter Miler at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The women's elite mile goes off at 9:15 pm local time (6:15 pm Pacific), with the men's elite mile underway fifteen minutes later.

Allie Buchalski of the Brooks Beasts and Washington alum Eleanor Fulton are in the women's field, while Waleed Suliman of the Beasts, Washington State alum Paul Ryan, and Washington alum Mick Stanovsek, who now runs for the North Carolina based Puma Elite, are among those in the men's field.

Media partner RunnerSpace.com ($) will stream the races.
