The eyes of track and field fans in the United States will focus directly on Des Moines, Iowa beginning Thursday for the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium, better known as the home of the annual Drake Relays meet contested in late April.

The big prize on the line in America’s Heartland is a spot on Team USATF for the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in late September-early October in Doha, Qatar.

Normally, the USATF Championships are contested in late June, but with the world championships late in the calendar, the world championships qualifying meet was moved back a month.

As has been the case in previous years, the top three finishers who hold the all-important world championships standards are on the team for Doha.

Additionally, the United States will get three entries plus a wild card entry for the defending champion from London in the men’s 100, pole vault, and triple jump, along with the women’s 100, 400, 400 hurdles, 3000 steeplechase, and the long jump.

Any athlete who wins the 2019 IAAF Diamond League series in their event will also earn a wild card berth into the world championships; however the cap per each individual event is four entries per country.

Forty athletes (20 men/20 women) with ties to the state of Washington are entered in this weekend’s national championships.

The University of Washington has two undergrads competing in javelin thrower Denham Patricelli and pole vaulter Olivia Gruver, while Washington State has three undergrads entered in the meet in 100 meter runner Emmanuel Wells, 1500 meter runner Paul Ryan, and 110 hurdler Nick Johnson.  Wells and Ryan were among the last to be accepted into the national championships.

The Seattle based Brooks Beasts has eleven athletes in the meet.
